...and the kids love it and are generally doing better overall. http://www2.nbc4i.com/news/2012/nov/16/kids-learn-cardboard-classroom-ar-1243572/Quote: Wellington teacher, Pete Kaser, was inspired by his three year students to try something a little different. He removed all the toys and learning material and replaced it with raw materials, like cardboard boxes, and what he discovered surprised even him.
"Not one of them complained about not having a toys and it was actually really cool because so of the quieter kids actually got to show leadership roles in projects,” said Kaser. Man, Christmas shopping is going to be SO EASY this year. I'm just gonna hang around out back the liquor store and pick up something for everyone.

Love it! Here is an article if you aren't up for watching a video: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/2 ... 71135.htmlThanks for this. S'nation. A friend of mine has raised both his kids (11 and 4) without toys and its kind of amazing how creative they are.

Yeah, I had a pretty fun time cutting eyeholes in a paper bag this evening for the boy... Tomorrow possibly arm holes. (Before the eyeholes he just kind of wandered around bonking into stuff. He's still small enough that a grocery bag goes down about to his waist...)

My friends send their two year old to a kindergarten/preschool without toys. There are several daycare places in Germany with this concept. My sister is a kindergarten teacher here in Germany and they have a toy free period once in a while. She also thinks the kids benefit a lot, get really creative and seem to be very satisfied with what they accomplish during that time. Her own kid is in that kindergarten too, and she puts away the toys st home, too, from time to time and they play with other stuff. There are also a couple of outdoor kindergartens, where kids just go inside when the weather is really bad. They also don't have toys, I think.

I love this idea! Right now my daughter is playing in the living room with toy bins. She also gets excited at the end of the oatmeal canister because those are awesome for everything.

Best thing: boxes and found materials don't come with "girl toy" and "boy toy" labels.

That is super awesome. My son LOVES boxes. I should pack away the toys once in a while.

haha i love the bag pic. Kai was just running around with one on his head on thankgiving and my mom was hysterical about the unknown comic.
The no-toy idea is so awesome. I wish I could be more like that but I love toys and can't help myself!

No-toys is awesome! My best childhoood memories are of playing make-believe and making stuff out of old egg cartons and cardboard tubes.

My niece, who is now almost 15, made a spaceship out of a huge refrigerator box. She parked herself in there with her teddy bears and tried to charge my dad for admission (which he happily paid of course). Then they went to the moon.
She was about 5 years old at the time. I love that kid. :)
