My son was almost called Ebenezer Wolfgang. My family gave me such shiitake over it though.

I was very nearly Marina Elise, but my dad didn't like it, so I ended up Ashley Lauren instead - named after two characters on The Young and The Restless, which my mom watched a lot while pregnant. Really. I was going to be Austin if I'd been a boy. I think I dodged a bullet there.

I always liked the name Anthony for a boy, and Cady (pronounced with a long 'a' like Katie) for a girl. Neither will happen if I ever have kids. Anthony was ruined for me by a guy I dated named with that name, and nobody would ever pronounce Cady right. A lifetime of being called "Caddy" would suck. Oh well.

When I was pregnant with #2 and we didn't know the gender. I really wanted Declan for a boy.
My husband listened, paused, and replied "not a chance." Then I presented Shae. Pause.... "okay, that
one works for me."

Mrs. Face has a 1st cousin twice removed whose name is kind of Declan. But his parents spelled it really stupidly.

Shae says he loves his name because everyone pronounces it correctly. Although people sometimes like to add and "n" in there and that does not bode well with him.

equally bad, my sister named her beautiful son Daemon (which always reminds of email error messages sent from "Mailer Daemon")

ETA: oh shoot I just googled Daemon and its a Latinized spelling of the Greek word from classical mythology, oops.

I had never heard it before my roommate's sister named their baby Declan. I really like it, but people probably will have trouble pronouncing it.

I have an uncle-in-law Declan, who was born in Ireland but grew up in the US. I asked him once, 'when you were growing up, would people ever say your name as "de CLAN?"' His face fell and he said, 'All the time.'

If my dad had had his way I'd be called Beatrice Margaret and my brother would be Bruce Michael because he wanted our initials to be BMW after his favourite cars!

I sure ain't pregnant, but I like to fantasize about these sort of things. My top picks for baby names are Mila Faye for a girl, and Salem, Owen (unless it becomes too popular in the future), Eden, or Lake for a boy. My boyfriend's name is Asa and that's probably the prettiest sounding male name to me, but I obviously wouldn't use it for my kid because of the association/confusion.

Ooh, I like Asa! I'm sure it would get vetoed by the Mr. though.

I lobbied hard for Asa...such a classic, "cowboy" name to my ears.

I actually really like Beatrice Margaret. You don't seem like a Beatrice though.

My name's Sarah. It's annoyingly common.

I'd like to be called Io after my favourite Galilean moon.

Dignan. Ha ha.

Inexplicably, this reminds me that I was pushing for Benedict for the Emperor for a while. He has an uncle named Ben but I don't really love the name Benjamin and Benedict sound really freaking good with our last name.

But between people going "like the eggs" or "like Benedict Arnold?" or "are you Catholic?!" I kinda gave up on it.

That's like my dad! His first name is just Steve, not Steven. I didn't find this out until last year, so I find this news really fascinating.

My full first name is Nikki, and I hated that growing up because people would constantly ask me what it was short for or, even worse, ASSUME it was short for Nicole or Nicolette or Nikita or something and just call me whatever the hell they wanted. So I probably wouldn't do just Ben, even though I like that!

I do not have a kiddo, but I would like to adopt a baby girl some day, and if the possible other party is okay with it (or even if not, actually, I think I might puff up and growl) call her Grey, after Grey DeLisle and Lady Grey tea.

My name was not decided until several days after my birth - I was in the system as Baby Girl pretty much right up until I went home, and I was a premie in the ICU for a good while. :P The first time my parents thought they had settled on a name, it was Grace, upon which my grandma pointed out that if my middle name was going to be Ann, after her, they had better not call me Grace, because GAS is not a flattering acronym.

Anyway, in-ward, the contenders were pretty gnarly. My elder sister's top picks were Daisy, Blossom, and Sarah. My mother put forward Anastasia and Drizella (I think I would have been okay with Drizzle as a nickname?). Eventually they realised the only name that none of them truly loathed was Emily, so that's what I got. What they didn't realise at the time was that I was the one who truly loathed that name; unfortunately I wasn't really able to voice that opinion, hah.

Later names I've gone by have included Calico Jack Rackham, Morgan (as in Captain Morgan... and Captain Morgan), Tay (from a fantasy novel), and Jas (as in Captain James Hook... not Cook)*. Now I've settled on Jas Morgan, which most parties seem to not hate. I still get a mixture of names - there are people who call me Em/M, Emmy, Jas, Jack, Morgan, etc. I agree with what's been said above about just straight-up naming someone the diminutive of a name rather than giving them the whole thing and trying to choose which nickname people will use. It's why I'm Jas instead of James. I know I'd never use James in conversation. It's, like, a REAL NAME. What is UP with that? Weirdos.

Um. Hope you guys wanted some links!

*Yes, I <3 pirates.

My mom is just Beth, but people ALWAYS assume she's an Elizabeth. It definitely irritates her. On the other hand, I usually just go by my nickname and not that many people ever ask what it's short for. AND, when I tell people my real name I end up getting called everything but. So, in general, I think it's really hard to predict how a name is gonna play out.

We don't have kids, but the boyfriend has already vetoed Gloria and Beatrice, the two girls' names I like best. I also love Sophia, but that's near the top of the girls' name list, and as a Sarah, I will not force my kids to be in the most-common-name category. So those names are off the list before there even was a reason for a list.

My parents didn't want to know my sex until I was born, so they called me "Rex" in the womb. I ended up being Elizabeth. Rex is cooler...
