I always felt bad for Chastity Bono, but it looks like he survived his trials and tribulations just fine.
Also, anyone named "Dolores". To be named for pain is not nice. Candida is a saint here, and is also the word for bleach, which just kind of makes my head hurt when i think about it.
And *secret alert* Mr Torque and I almost separated when he expressed his desire to name one of our babies "Valkyria". Even worse, his dead sister had had this name so it was a really, really bad fight when i put my foot down. But can you imagine?

I went to school with an Acacia, she said her parents fell in love under an acacia tree and that's how she got her name. I'm pretty sure that's just where she was conceived.

In the NYT magazine crossword yesterday, there was a clue "Unpopular baby name". The answer was (SPOILER!) -> ADOLF .

Did anyone mention that Brendan means "smelly hair"? I'm too lazy to look.

Oh, well; it takes all sorts, dunnit?

Brendan is supposed to descend from a gaelic word for prince. However in St Brendan's time i don't think anyone was big on shampoo or personal hygiene. so i can see smelly hair.

Ninja. I actually know a couple who did name their son that, and it's an awesome name in theory but I don't really think they thought things out too well.

Names of students I encountered in the Bronx:
C8lynn Takeela (sound it out...)
I went to high school with Amanda Blow. Poor thing, every time she got paged to the office, a dozen adolescent boys would shout "I'll go!"

Oh, I wanted to name the Emperor "Tyrannosaurus." I figured it would make him the coolest kid in third grade.
And speaking of Lolita, our dog when I was growing up was named Lolita. I asked my father about this when I was youngish. He was a high school English teacher, and he told me that he named her after the greatest novel in the English language, which I didn't understand until decades later. And then at some point I told a friend this, and he said, "Oh yeah, that makes sense. Of course he named his dog Lolita."
"Why?" I asked.
"Because she's the teacher's pet."

Also, I've heard of L-a (say it with me now, Ladasha), but I'm not sure if that's an urban myth like lemonjello and orangejello. Ledasha is an urban legend. See here for a thoughtful look at it. I went to school with a girl named Chassity. Her mother was going for Chastity but spelled it phonetically. Also, nice try dude. Tyrannosaurus Rex was MY name idea.
