I am shocked at how expensive this stuff is new. $18 for a Thomas train?!?

No kidding!!!@

A couple of people gave the boy smaller sets that came with trains for birthdays and Christmas, including a couple of Thomas-type engines and some train cars. Then we had a little set and enough trains to get started. After that, I searched ebay for:

wooden train track lot

I found things like:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-of-130-pc-W ... 1c35a01956

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Thomas-the-Trai ... 19e0a2c74a

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Thomas-The-Trai ... 2ec9ab4f25

Look for the ones with bad photos and try to see if they have anything good.

Sets with lots of trains and cars will get higher bids, so unless you're really into them avoid them.

I bid sort of mid-range-- not lowballing but also setting myself a pretty strict budget. I went over on one set because it had some neat extra bits, but I don't think I paid more than $20 or $30 for each of the 3 lots. It was under $100 for ebay things. It did take a couple of weeks of regular checking, but it was worth it.

We also had a small toy store go out of business here, and I picked up some unusual pieces there during their final sale-- turntables and wiggly tracks and T-junctions.

Anyway, good luck! I love getting stuff in the mail, and big boxes of tracks are really satisfying to receive and open. 8)

Finally!

Image

Since he got this Tuesday, Walter has played trains at least 4 hours a day. He talks to them. He makes up little dramas and gives them dialog.

We ended up getting the Melissa and Doug set, because with free shipping and an Amazon Mom discount it was comparable in price to the lots on eBay. Also, there was a recall a few years ago of all the red, green, black, and brown Thomas brand trains and buildings, because of lead paint, so I'm wary of used trains. The M&D set has lots of track, two bridges, and plenty to keep us busy until birthday/Christmas.

Yay, trains! That's so much fun! I might have to pull out our train set soon.

I'll have to post some pics of the handmade accessories my boyfriend's brother made for my boyfriend's kid. Including a train that holds "logs" that can be dispensed one by one from a taller platform into a lower car!

Kai is still super into trains. We brought him to Strasburg Railroad in PA this weekend to ride on a life-size real working old timey steam train decorated to look exactly like Thomas. He was in heaven, it was so adorable!

I'm also so excited for Christmas already because I found him a ton of Thomas Duplos on ebay for a really good price, and got a bunch of lego tracks. He is going to go nuts! I can't wait to set it all up around the tree and see his face when he wakes up.

We just bought a train table yesterday! My mom told me that they were sending us a big box of my childhood Brio trains, and then serendipitously someone on a local forum was selling a cool modern train table and a bunch of Melissa and Doug sets. We're saving it all for November so Sven has a super cool new toy when the baby arrives, but I'm pretty excited.
