solipsis, you are mere weeks away from him setting them up, i'm sure, my son is 33 months and he has been building his for at least 6 months now. To be fair, he has been playing with trains since he was 18 months old. For his second birthday we went for a train ride. Planning a trip on the skunk train in May when my mom and grandmom come to see him, i mean us.

How much did it go for on ebay? We've been meaning to sell ours for years. We've got hundreds of dollars' worth.

It depends. I managed to lowball one ridiculously large set of stuff for $19.99 (plus shipping), but I've seen boxes of tracks go for $50 and up. One guy broke his out into types (a couple of sets of 20 curves, a set of 20 straight pieces, a set of 10 or 15 switches and intersections of various sorts) and seemed to do okay, ranging from $15 to $25, but that means more complicated packing and shipping. Flat Rate Boxes are great, though, since you can pack a good amount of tracks into a large flat rate box...

Anyway, we ended up with what will be something like 300 pieces of track and a bunch of trains and stuff (a few less once I prune out the beat-up pieces) for under $100, which is a seriously good deal... $10 gets you like six straight or curved pieces if you buy them new, as I'm sure you know... :P

So that picture was taken BEFORE you got the extra track? I want to come and play in your house!

I used to play with train tracks. They are the best.

The second picture (with the pile in the background) was taken after the first box of track ($40) arrived. It had a TON of pieces, but a lot of them were pretty beat-up and will be the first to go during the inevitable pruning. The second box was mostly curves and switches and cost me only about $25 on eBay-- it was in super-great shape and included a lot of neat crossings and stuff like that. I don't know this guy's kids, but they take great care of their toys.

The third box is on the way, and for $20 (I lowballed it and didn't expect to win, but did) it has a bunch of weird pieces and rockets and stuff. It apparently has glow-in-the-dark pieces and toxic waste trucks and stuff, from some weird space set they don't make any more. It also has a ridiculous number of random wooden trucks in about the same scale. I'm going to go through that box pretty carefully, clear out anything too weird or broken (the description warned that there were some broken pieces), and sneak the track bits into the track crate at night. That's probably when I'll purge the crappier pieces from the first boxes. I'll hang onto the trucks and stuff for special occasions or in case other kids visit or something, and maybe drop some of them back onto ebay.

So yeah, shipping put it a bit over $100, but comparing this with new sets, it's probably $500 worth of stuff new, and enough track to start a shipping empire. And it's all sturdy enough that if the second kid decides he likes trains too, it should last.

I just did some research, going through photos. GG was heavily into trains from January 2004 through August 2006, at least. That was more than two and a half years of (sometimes) nonstop train play. And train purchases. And train discussions. At one point, when he was 3.5, he actually split into three separate children so he could play with trains three times as much. It was crazy.

Image

He dressed up as two different trains during Halloween in 2005, when he was just over 3. (Mrs. Face made the costumes. The yellow one is a Union Pacific diesel. The black-and-white one is a Norfolk Southern.)

Oh man. Even after sorting out the stuff we weren't keeping, the 50-pound box of wooden toy stuff had a LOT of train bits. I have a bag of future toys for if we have visitors and need some to share (some trains and cars and stuff), and we now have a 50L "extremely useful box" (or whatever they're called) that is as full as it can get with tracks, and some random other bits. Here we go:

The number 2 is on the move!

dude you are seriously making me think that Dahlia's 3rd bday present should be some trains/tracks. She's in love with her little wooden trucks and already parks them inside her little dollhouse so maybe we should try some different transportation toys!

Yep, I recognize that bridge! I think that's the set we started with.

Welcome to train-based doom. 8)

We stopped in a store having a moving clearance sale in Manhattan the other day that had some toys and they had a drawbridge for this kind of train. It looked so neat! Too bad Vi is at least a year away from this...

No kidding, huh? I was looking at these pictures and remembering his long hair and cheeks. Now he's going to be 4 in a couple of weeks.

Unfortunately we play with trains less now because his brother hasn't quite figured out that you shouldn't just pick up the tracks and wander off with them while other people are trying to drive trains on them. He will pretty soon I bet though.

Yeah. He is getting REALLY into trains now too, so hopefully the track thing will click soon.

Yeah, Malka loves to destroy the tracks after she's built them. Much more than she likes to drive trains on them. But we scored a big bag of hand-me-down books about trains from friends moving out of town (she was giving away most of their kids' library - I just picked up every train book!). She's really getting into looking at pictures of trains.
