what basic painkillers are ok during pregnancy?

i did something horrifying to my back and have basically been crippled all week.
at first i was taking ibuprofen sparingly and that helped a lot but then my husband read somewhere you shouldnt take it in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy because it can double your risk of miscarriage.

i have no idea where he read this info as i was lying on the couch in agonizing pain.

i just went to see my chiro this morning so i should be headed back in the right direction but we are going camping this weekend and i will be sleeping on an air mattress sooooo it's possible i will still be kind of sore.

NHS Direct also says not to take ibuprofen in the first two trimesters, but says paracetamol is okay.

Yeah, according to my OB, ibuprofen (and aspirin) is not recommended during pregnancy. Acetaminophen is OK.

Did you get a list of allowed meds from your OB? I found the list really helpful when things like headaches/heartburn/insomnia came up since it's hard keeping track of what's recommended and what's not.

I just had a look to see if difene gel would be safe and it isn't.

Is the pain muscular/bone/nerve?

Thanks everyone, I have not had my first OB appt yet, I called Wednesday & they told me to call back after I peed on a stick. I peed on a stick that night but I haven't called the dr back yet. I feel soooo much better after going to the chiro. I told him we were going camping & he said to bring an ice pack in the car because my "L4" is still very inflamed & and I might not enjoy the semi long car ride without it. So I'm icing it intermittently.

my midwife said no ibuprofen or aspirin. i'd been taking ibuprofen all along, and no harm done, but i switched to acetaminophen after.

no use taking it sparingly though. it's safe for pregnancy, so if you're in pain, take the max dose you're allowed. if the pain continues, ask if there are other pain management techniques you can use.

There have been studies lately that have hinted at links between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and breathing problems like asthma in children. I haven't reviewed these, don't know how reliable they are, don't consider "evidence based medicine" to be science, and other disclaimers. So the answer may just be "none of them." That said, I used acetaminophen a few times when I had a kidney infection.

Yeah, there have been some studies that show a link between asthma and acetaminophen use during pregnancy, but acetaminophen is still considered the safest OTC painkiller to use while pregnant.

When I get a headache while pregnant, I go for a cup of coffee first, and if that doesn't help, I take a Tylenol.

My drs said tylenol only. Kellymom.com has a good list of meds that are safe!
