Shorty found out yesterday that she has two options. She can push through this year and graduate a year early. OR she can take a slacker term and take a bunch of college now classes through the school next year. So she is taking almost all college classes her last term this year and all next year. Which should significantly boost her ability to get scholarships and into her top choices.

Way to go Shorty!

I have been so intermittent here, I've missed you all. My youngest is 17 and his girlfriend stays over with us often on the weekend. I remember wondering when my oldest was a teen how I would deal with this request but it turns out I am pretty cool with it. Her family is somewhat dysfunctional and I think she's better off here than there. I'd like to take in her 8-y.o. step-sister too, part-time. The girlfriend, H, has had several bouts of pneumonia this year and her parents continue to smoke in the house all the time when they are not working, amongst other things. The parents drink and have all-night parties on the weekend, and her mom's a teacher. Blech.

Good new is his crohn's seems to be responding well to the remicade and he is feeling pretty good going into his last year of high school.

That is great news, Arisaig.

Shorty is a junior. This was our second to last EVER first day back to school. She was anxious because today is the first time since the breakup that she will see her ex. So, queen shady is wearing her "you break it you buy it " shirt that has a broken heart on it.

Like nobody will know what that's about.

First day of high school for us. Chompy seemed pretty relaxed about it. I didn't feel so relaxed.

Oh poor shorty. Being a teenager is so hard. Looks like she nailed her first day back look! Meanwhile I am researching home schooling. I have about 3.5 years before my lo even needs to start school and I am against it!

I feel like we're seeing a real shift. Chompy seems so much more... grown up, now that he's a high schooler. He walks to and from school by himself now. I used to walk or drive him every day and walk home with him almost every day. Now he's cool being on his own. It makes such a big difference.

Right on, Chompy! It's such a huge thing when they are ready to do things like that on their own.

Now... if there was a way to get them to clean up on their own.

How is he liking high school?

He likes it well enough. He certainly doesn't like it less than middle school!

Hey, now that the boards are going away, I don't need to worry about chompy discovering them and seeing everything I said about him growing up.

Discovering? Hasn't he had accounts on here at various times? Optimus Prime etc?

Yes, he has. But he's not interested at all, and it never occurred to him to poke around.

Breathless update about chompy's non-honors "honors" classes!

I think they are (as predicted) pretty slow. But he really likes the teacher of one of the classes, and I think he's getting a lot out of it, in spite of the slowness. He hates the other class (chemistry) but has signed up for (actual) honors chemistry next year.

Anyway, there's only a week and a half to go for ninth grade.

This year (like all the ones that preceded it) has been remarkably drama-free. This kid and his friends just aren't into drama. There aren't cliques and factions and crushes and breakups. It's just hanging out.
