Why is my 11-year-old this invested in showing us how dependent he is? I thought kids were supposed to want to show you how independent they were.

Even with my juniors and seniors, they lurch wildly back and forth from needing hand holding and head patting to knowing everything and needing no instruction (ha!).

Gah! Alex told a friend of hers that she could stay at our house indefinitely . WITHOUT ASKING US FIRST. And she doesn't see why this is wrong.

Poor Shorty just let for her walk to school carrying a trombone, a backpack that weighs close to 40 pounds and a lunch box. This is not a normal day, but I really don't understand why they expect these kids to carry so much stuff home. There really has to be a better way.

That's awful kfad! Shae's high school checks out copies of all the textbooks for home use and then they have school use copies so they eliminates a TON of weight. He does always have a huge soccer bag though, on top of his regular backpack.

The state robotics competition went okay. They did not do as well as they had hoped. 8 kids on the team, four of them are super perfectionists (including Shorty). But the good news is that no one melted down in the middle of it all. They are the only team in any category from their middle school to go to a higher level competition in something like 10 years.

Shorty saw the scores and kept saying... "Hooray, I am mediocre.". And then she amused herself by telling me a story in a ridiculous accent for the very long drive home.

My child has been hired to teach another kid. i am not enthused about this setup. am trying to keep my negativity to myself as the kid really has a bee in her bonnet about making money and i don't want to ruin it for her.

It is so hard to bite your tongue when you think they are going to be making a mistake. My kids all know that when mom smiles and nods, what she really means is "I disagree, but will let you forge ahead". They may not like it, but they often like it better than mom saying what is really on her mind.

That said, maybe teaching will help her with responsibility and all the good things rather than being a negative experience.

What is concerning you, Torque? Some kids really blossom when they have the opportunity to help other students. I've seen successes between the most unlikely pairings.

I have one student who receives sped services and can be a handful (I was warned about her by other teachers! I hate it when they do that. If a kid is a jerk, I'll find out, but don't try to set me up with negative preconceptions). She is a total sweetie and nothing keeps her on task and efficient like getting a concept so she can help her table mates. It's awesome to see and her confidence has grown so much.

i think peer tutoring is awesome, lavawitch, and you're right. I guess I am a bit grumpy because she's being paid to "teach another kid english", no specifics, no materials, no goals. She is completely at sea, and I really don't understand how the kid's mother (an educator herself) would think that some random 14 year old would be successful at teaching her kid English instead of, say, a teacher with training, materials, and experience.
or perhaps, Kfad, you hit the nail right on the head. She could really do well with this, but I am just cringing thinking about possibilities.
Like today, first class, went okay, except she hadn't prepared more than 20 minutes of materials. Then the kid called her mom to pick her up, who was all yelling "but that wasn't an hour! you're supposed to have an hour of class!". Which I guess is my worry- the mom is holding her to adult standards, when she can't even remember to brush her teeth. (yes, i know this is probably the best thing that could happen. but i still feel like i'm watching a train wreck.)

Can you help her plan some things to get started? Maybe they could do normal kid things, only all in English. Or stuff like take a trip around a grocery store, all in English.

It seems like her strength as a teacher would be in the informality of it.

Yes, well, I am going about getting some of my materials back (i gave up teaching and gave all my books away in June). In the meantime, helping out a bit here and there...

Please, someone—please tell me tweens are harder than teens! Please tell me the insistent helplessness, the crazy emotions, the constant know-it-allism and arguing get better.

Lie to me, I don't care. Just tell me it gets easier!

The tweens at the library are 1000 times worse to deal with than the teens. The teens seem to mostly have enough self control to keep their shiitake together. The tweens are completely crazy.

Basically what Vantine said. There are two types of teachers: those willing (and even like!) to teach middle school, and everybody else.

When I was subbing, a day in a 7th grade classroom was enough to make me rethink career choices. 9th graders are like normal little humans again.

First week of subbing ever, 7th grade Science.

Dear god, I really did rethink. And then ultimately, years later, quit that shiitake.

I reallllly like 4th and 5th grade though. I would consider teaching 4th or 5th.

i sure bloody hope it gets easier, because i can only think of about three things that would make this harder and they involve incarceration or hospitals.
(i'm mostly joking, it has already gotten easier. but i still find myself having to say to Baggy "i know you're frustrated, why don't you take a walk please" otherwise we get very close to insta-fistfight here sometimes. and the physical trauma of exhaustion and angst and all that are still strong but not as bad as they once were)

The teens just hide their crazy better. They don't like spray their crazy all over, all day long. You think everything is awesome and going along just fine and then the crazy just explodes out all at once. So, uh, yeah, it's better? Except for on the bad days? At least not all of the days are bad?

Out of 200 kids I interact with every week, the ONLY, and I mean, ONLY ones who ever come to me with social drama, helplessness, crazy emotions, etc. are 6th graders. It is like a freaking plague. The 7th graders have the social drama, but they stop talking to adults about it all the damn time and stop asking for impossible social interventions. I don't know which is better.
