Ugh, that is lame! It's about 50/50 for dances here. Kids either go with dates or in groups of friends, so it's no pressure.

in the US it was the same. of course when Baggy went in costume, with a girl date, it was like a powderkeg.

I want to say that last night I took Baggy to a consular event at a swanky restaurant. It was not super formal but the girl has fantastic manners and is graceful even when surrounded by stuffy old farts yelping loudly in English and attracting lots of stares and terrified waitstaff. She also got to explain to everyone what everything on the menu was (all in Japanese). Sadly for her at the end of the night she managed to knock a thing of soy sauce onto the floor and made a huge shattery mess, but she dealt with that gracefully as well.

Tonight is our very last middle school function.
I am actually not sad.

Monday is her promotion ceremony.
Then we are totally done with middle school. FOREVER!

She won a class award in band!!!!!

She won the discipline award. Which considering he was sending home notes at the first of the year because of her motor mouth, is pretty amazing.
I talked to him and he said he was really impressed with her dedication to the instrument (trombone) and her dedication to band in general.

So, I am off to find a trombone I can afford so she can practice all summer and be ready for high school band. Exciting times.

Great! Isn't it nice when they (let themselves) realize what they can accomplish?

kfad, that's fantastic!

torque, yay for Baggy's manner's and poise. So comforting to see what they are capable of doing!

I am SO FORKING happy that it's summer. I don't want to think about or talk about grades at all.

(edited to add) His grades ended up good, not as great as he could be doing, but fine. He lettered, and pulled out some decent exam grades, but omg the effort on my part to get him to care. Can't even.

We are dreading summer over here. We need to get him into camps, which requires financial backing from the (perfectly willing) grandparents, or else he'll be glued to the computer all day every day.

We are really lucky here to have a parks program that teams up with the Food for Lane County thing and some other non-profits. They offer a program at several of the local parks that is lunch and games and sometimes crafts. All for free. Shorty may be at that grey-area of too old, but if the kids are still in school they are welcome.

And it is my understanding that this year the local game store (best store ever, sells board games of all stripes and has a massive games library with space for you to play in shop for free) is going to be doing a game day every so often. I think that is brilliant.

She won several more awards at her promotion ceremony. Several for academics and two for leadership.
And then she was in the hall sobbing because she misses her friends already.

I played trombone back in the day (actually, I get to play with gay band fairly soon! yay pride!)!

Anyway, we got one for really cheap @ a pawn shop, but there are probably more outlets nowadays (Craigslist and such).

If she is going to be in marching band, I will suggest getting a bell-attaching lyre instead of the usually available one that hooks behind the mouthpiece. That thing would continually flop over and I'd be trying to hold it up while playing and marching.

I don't think she will be in marching band. I know for sure is in the orchestra class. And possibly jazz. I really don't think marching band is a good idea for a kid who can't really walk across a room without hurting herself.

The middle one! She is going to graduate early! I am so excited. I just got a call from her school counselor who told me she will be part time by the second quarter. This is the kid that was so ready to drop out and just give up. She is a walking talking "it gets better" segment.

I had to drop out of band in high school. Marching band was a requirement for orchestra and, for many reasons, I didn't want to have to play clarinet in marching band. All the schools here still require that for any music participation in high school.

Thank the stars that is not a rule here.
And I say that as the marching band nerd. Shorty and marching band would be a bad bad thing.

Same here! I played clarinet too, and suffered through a whole marching band season just so I could play in the orchestra. I HATED it, so I had to quit playing clarinet. Way to encourage kids to keep playing musical instruments, stupid high school!

I played bassoon, which made it even worse, plus the expense of a second instrument when I already struggled with the rental fees for the first.

So my son is all done with the tube feeding. He had been putting it in each night (or most nights) for two months and now the gastro has told him he can stop. He did gain more weight than he needed to - I think he was eating normally during the day and then getting an extra 1000+ calories a night and unlike some crohn's people he was a normal size to begin with. He is only taking half the recommended dosage of 6-MP though so I am concerned that his fistula might grow or he might get a new one. His blood work was all in normal range for the first time last week.

The first time he took out the tube - back when he kept it in full time he needed to change it once a month - I couldn't even look at it. I held out an opaque plastic bag and looked the other way while he dropped it in and I wrapped it up. Then when he had to take it out every morning I realized I had to get over my squeamishness because I would have to clean it each day. I realized I was good when one day I was swishing the tube in vinegar solution with one hand and eating a cupcake with the other. Gah, you can get used to anything.

So now I can complain about him. He is so messy and lazy! We have a rec room in the basement that we don't use a lot. He mostly uses it to watch netflix so on the rare times that I go down to use the tv or to clean it up because we are having guests there is a pile of dishes and cans/juice boxes and garbage. I have told him not to do it (gross and bugs) and he still does. Around the computer upstairs there are always dishes, tissues, wrappers, dirty socks, etc.

He also has started this incredibly endearing thing where he puts his clothes in the dryer and when they are dry he leaves them in there, takes out what he wants for the day, changes in the laundry/storage room and leaves his dirty clothes on the floor. So not only is the dryer occupied when someone else goes to use it but the floor is covered with his dirty clothes. Now I am not the neatest person but I use that room a lot and it inconveniences me. I was easy on him during the tube period and it is coming back to bite me on the butt. Time to crack the whip!

congratulations!! gross and all!

my kid's room is totally like that. it's amazing we dont have cockroaches (YET). i can't believe she doesn't have spiders in her bed. she did have a huge one in her pants though, which now is pretty funny but at the time, well, it was pretty funny then too, but she still doesn't pick her shiitake up off the floor!!!! if a tarantula in your pants doesn't do it, what will??
ugh. have fun cracking whips, i am constantly having every little kindness come to bite me in the butt too. no good deed goes unpunished, as they say.

Exactly. I am grateful every day for ordinary annoyances, annoying as they are - ah, you know what I mean :-)

However, the kid told me last night to "calm down". I don't think he'll do that again.
