woohoo Ada! Sashi, I know what a big step that is 'cause we were in the same position, and I'm so glad you got through it. Yes, you'll be a bit freaked out the first time she's there by herself the whole time but you will also be so relieved.

Walter's first day (not a great picture because he wouldn't stand still):

And here is the first day of school last year, featuring the exact same clothes:

It might get better, but right now it's getting worse.

All we can get out if him is that his first period class (percussion ensemble) is the problem. It's not the teacher, or any of the kids, or the fear of being put on the spot. It's just... awful and makes him want to cry. So mornings (and some evenings) find him in tears, obsessing over his dread of going to school.

Is it the noise? I know you've always described him as a pretty sensitive person, and both my mom and I are very very sensitive to noise (among other overly stimulating environments). Cacophony gives me headaches and I can only imagine what percussion ensemble in middle school sounds like...

Yeah, I didn't want to be the first one to say it, but first period middle school percussion ensemble would make ME cry.

back to school night was last night. all i could think the whole time was "i have to start blogging." i took notes, it was unbelievable. an auditorium full of parents who made me feel very young and very strange. approximately 75% of them texting the entire time; a symphony of rings and beeps and dings as the principal looked peeved- and a large no-cell-phones-please sign right above his head. giant masses of parents moving like cattle through the hallway, bisqueing and moaning about everything; more confederate flags in the parking lot than i've ever seen in my life ["when did this happen??" i asked my mother. her reply was that she didn't even know what a confederate flag was. i had to do an image search. this is new jersey, for pete's sake.]. Teachers look about as old as my kid, just like police you know you're old when the cops all look younger than you.

I don't know if it's the noise that bothers him. (He usually likes noise and lots of it.) But maybe earplugs would help him feel more comfortable. Unless they made him feel more conspicuous, which probably wouldn't help.

We can't anything more specific from him about what's making him feel so sad. It's just first period. And every morning, from the time he gets up until he's out the door, he's miserable and anxious and (sometimes) desperate.
