Walter James was born this morning, November 24 at 12:45am. 7 pounds, 7 ounces and 19.5 inches long. Lots of red-brown hair.

Image

We had a very difficult labor and birth. I wanted an intervention-free vaginal birth; in the end, I managed to avoid a c-section, but needed tons of interventions I never anticipated. Yesterday was a hard day, and I am pretty beat up.

Walt looks just like his dad, everyone who sees him says so. Unfortunately he is in the NICU for now; he somehow popped part of a lung during or after birth and has air trapped between his lungs and his ribs, making it hard for him to get good breaths. Last night I was terrified, but today he seems stronger. His breathing isn't wheezy anymore, he cries well, and although they won't let him nurse yet, he sucked on my pinky like a champ. I am sad he won't get to room in with me and that I'll probably have to leave the hospital without him, but I'm grateful he is getting stronger. The picture above is the best we got of him before he got his oxygen tube; I'll wait to post more until he doesn't look so sickly.

I can talk more about the birth later; now I need to get acquainted with the hospital breast pump.

WHOA! Congratulations, Mittenfamily!

I'm sorry things didn't happen the way you wanted, but he is absolutely beautiful and I'm so so happy for you! My friend's daughter had what sounds like the same thing with her lung when she was born and had to go to the NICU at a different hospital for a while, which was rough. But now she is the sturdiest, healthiest little one year old ever!

I can't wait to hear more about Walter and about your birth experience. But for now I hope you get lots of good rest! Congratulations again!

Wow! What a surprise! Congratulations!!
I'm sorry you had a difficult time and the poor little guy is the nicu but I'm glad you are ok. Best wishes for Walter to get better really soon! He is really cute (even crying) and that's a sweet name. :.)

congrats he is gorgeous! hope he gets better. I had to pump for my firstborn-I was bff with lecithin because pumping caused lots of plugged ducts and lecithin helps prevent that.

Hooray!

GlueGun had to spend time in the NICU too, due to extreme jaundice. I was terrified, but he wasn't in there long.

They're TOUGH.
