Those fingers are so lovely, Mitten. You are amazingly strong to have gone through labor that long without an epidural, I salute you. Like jildez said breastfeeding is the best thing to help clear up jaundice, I hope you and Walter get lots of snuggling time now that you are home! Congrats again, mama!

Oh, mitten! I'm sorry you had such a rough time.

You're really sweet to not want to scare me and I would be a big fat liar if I said reading your birth story didn't shake me up a little, but you know what? You have a Walt now! I just keep telling myself that what I really want out of my birth is to meet my baby. I'm doing everything I can to prepare myself for labor, but I know I can't control what's going to happen. My perfect birth will be the one that gets my baby out into the world.

He really is beautiful. I hope you heal fast and get lots of cozy, cuddly bonding time. <3

He's so super cute! Congrats!

I'm sorry you had a rough labor and that he had some problems but I'm glad he's doing better! (Last week was a tough week for babies I think...) Labor can be scary and it sucks when it doesn't go as one hopes, but the awesome things are that you get an awesome baby and the bad stuff fades away :)

Damn, MM, that's intense! As others have said, don't second guess yourself. It sounds like you did what is right for you and it worked out ok in the end.

Were you happy with the hospital experience? I know there's been a lot of nurse issues up there, and I'm not sure if the strike is still going on. I was hoping so hard that it would affect your birth.

We missed the nursing strike by the skin of our teeth. It ended at 7am on Tuesday; I was admitted at 6am, so one of the replacement nurses took my blood pressure and got my gown, but by the time anything real happened the regular L&D nurses were back. And I must say, they were awesome. I had my own personal nurse all day, and then another came on at 7pm and stayed in my room the whole time. Both were fantastic: calm, competent, supportive of my birth plan, willing to do or get whatever I needed. I'm actually going to send them thank you notes this week, and, in light of the disputes the nurses are having with management, a letter to their supervisor. The doctor on call in the middle of the night was not who I would have picked for my primary OB (he was a little intervention-happy), but by the time he came in I was so out of it I didn't care, I just needed the baby out.

I was never comfortable with homebirth (for me), and I was very happy with the care I got at the hospital. The recovery nurses went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable and that I had vegan gluten-free food. The nurses in the NICU were great; one doctor was overly pessimistic and always started with the worst case scenario when she was talking to us. Other than that, no complaints. I'm glad we were at the hospital instead of home, because of Walter's complications. I'd do it again.

good for you Mitten! I have to say it makes me really happy to hear that you had good nurses and were overall happy with the way the hospital treated you, it gives me hope that next time I might be able to get my baby home from the hospital without the nurses derailing my breastfeeding permanently. Its nice to know that there are health care professionals that respect your wishes, and I am also glad that you will give them positive feedback to their supervisors.

I had a good nurse too- after I gave birth, the nurse said, "You must be starving. Someone brought in soft pretzels. I will see if there are any left and get you one." I swear that was the best tasting soft pretzel I have ever eaten!!

I am so glad everyone is doing well. He is gorgeous!

I am sorry things were rough at the end and that Walter had to go to the NICU. I hope you are healing ok. vagina raking is rough. I had first degree tears from henry's nails and a small tear that didn't require stitches from zelda since she came out hand first. ouch!

I hope you feel happy about walter and his birth. if you have feelings that you need to deal with we are here for you!

Thank you for sharing your story, you are a very brave woman to go that long without intervention.
I had never heard of anyone getting their vagina raked by fingernails. That sounds incredibly painful.
Glad to hear Walter is home with you now. Hope you both have a speedy recovery.
