I just read a pretty good book called Feeding Baby Green. It wasn't vegan, but it was really positive about a vegan diet being perfectly fine during pregnancy and childhood. It had a lot of really interesting stuff about how what we eat while pregnant has an impact on the baby's entire life, but it gives the info in a non scary way unlike some other articles I've read on fetal programming.
ps, no i'm not pregnant, but I'm taking a class on pregnancy and baby nutrition for my MS in nutrition.

One of my 4-year-old's favorite books in the world is Herb the Vegetarian Dragon. Granted, Herb is not vegan (I think he uses butter in his soup), but it's applicable enough, I think. (As far as my kids are concerned, "butter" means Earth Balance, anyway!)

He had the Herb figure that came with the book too, he joined us for dinner pretty often.

Is there a good book about pregnancy and birth anyone can recommend that is vegan-approved?
I have What to Expect when You're Expecting, but seem to remember that others on this board thought it wasn't great.

i liked the dr. sears pregnancy book. i haven't read what to expect because i was told it was a big book of what you shouldn't be doing and all the things that could go wrong. i couldn't confirm that, but the sears book is straightforward and positive.

I liked the mayo clinic book. my neighbor gave me what to expect so i read it. mostly it was just silly, like a magazine for 12-year olds, but about pregnancy.

I read 'The joy of pregnancy'. I don't think it says much different than any book, but it was straightforward and not too scary. I liked it for the basic information.

Penny Simkin's "Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn" was decent although I found it repetitive (but I could say that about 80% of baby books, so).
If you're thinking about a natural or out of hospital birth, I've heard good things about the Thinking Woman's Guide to Childbirth, but I haven't read it and I've seen it called biased. Personally I think most books out there are biased towards...well, assuming that absolutely everyone has and wants a drugged up hospital birth, so your mileage may vary! (The Simkin book IS pretty balanced about this)
If you're concerned about nutrition or need ammo against skeptics, Catherine Jones's "Eating for Pregnancy" is excellent; I think the advice is way more detailed than I needed but it's a good resource to have if you have any concerns. It talks about nutrient interactions, increasing your absorption, and has a chapter and recipes and lots of nonjudgmental info for veg*ns.

The Natural Pregnancy by Aviva Jill Romm M.D was really good and had information for vegans/vegetarians. I also purchased Your Vegetarian Pregnancy which is good too. I also like the Sears books.

i loved the pregnancy countdown book. it's not especially vegan, but it's not anti-vegan, either. it's a quick read, tells you what to expect at each stage, has lots of fun facts (like what type of fruit your baby resembles from week to week) and won't freak you out about stuff going wrong.

I have What to Expect when You're Expecting, but seem to remember that others on this board thought it wasn't great. "From the Hips" is awesome! Informative, straightforward, without bias, and includes newborn care and breastfeeding info that I found helpful as well. Also, its chapter on postpartum recovery is comprehensive and comforting--most pregnancy books kind of skim over that whole significant stage with a few vague sentences about buying maxi pads and checking stitches.

I just found this website Weelicious, with a whole section of vegan kid friendly recipes: http://weelicious.com/category/vegan/I'm browsing through it now and a lot of the recipes look really good.

Two picture books good for k-2 aged kids: Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving by Dav Pilkey and Souperchicken (not sure about author).
The Thanksgiving one has kids rescuing turkeys from becoming dinner and the chicken one is also about rescuing animals from becoming food. Both are funny and kid friendly.

Oh wow, I just got my Everything Guide to Vegan Pregnancy and I'd say it's well worth the 10 dollars on Amazon. It covers regular pregnancy stuff, foods you can/can't have, supplements, recipes, alternative and traditional birth options, how to deal with others, nutrition guides, and more. It's REALLY worth the ten bucks. Also it doesn't seem like a scare the mom-to-be kind of book

I loved Vicki Iovine's Girlfriend''s Guide to Baby Gear. http://www.amazon.com/Girlfriends-Guide ... 0399528458It is pithy and so userfriendly, and basically breaks up the massive universe of baby items that the stores tell you you need into "Must Haves" "Nice to Haves" "Avoid." It helped me get my brain around all the things there are out there. And its crazy how many things you think you need (because they are so marketed to you) that are actually not even safe! Like the mirror you put up in front of the rear facing infant car seat so you can always see the baby while driving. The book made the common sense point that (1) you need to watch the road and (2) in the event of a hard stop the mirror basically is in danger of falling and hitting your kiddo. And baby bumpers! They're in every crib photo in every baby store magazine and they look so cute, but have been responsible for 127 asphyxiation deaths and Md is looking into banning them.
