I just added that zoo book. Last night I looked through our kindergarten orientation packet which included a list of potential topics to be explored in the class' science/literacy/social studies units and "zoo animals" was a category*. We've already skipped out on two zoo field trips with her preschool. I imagine next year will be similar. ("Nutrition" was the other category that makes me concerned.)

*But no "wild animals" - hello, people, where do you think those zoo animals come from??? This is why I scoff at the idea that zoos are useful educational tools for people to understand wildlife and work toward conservation. People don't care about wild animals, they care about animals on display.

ugh i hate that taking kids to zoos is such like a "thing you do with your kids!"
theres a couple really horrible zoos within an hour or so of me and i really hate seeing pictures of my otherwise awesome friends taking their kids there and posting pics like "so and so just loved seeing a giraffe!"

yes because New England is such an awesome place for a giraffe!

the nutrition thing kills me too because it seems like all the info they have in schools is from like the 1970s and 80s* and really its really simple to include everyone in nutrition lessons. i mean vegetarianism is SO common these days.

teach kids they need protein! here are examples of protein. BEANS, tofu, (and gross meat options)

*my kid just turned 3 and doesnt go to school yet so perhaps this is no longer true
