Congrats annak! I'm glad to hear the hospital wasn't too bad. Looks like one fine baby!

Wow, congratulations Annak, and welcome to the outside world, beautiful Julia! Lovely name and a gorgeous wee baby, V looks so pleased with her tiny sister, too!
Westiebaby tried to start being born without my midwife in our hospital room, too. Pleased your hospital birth was a better experience than you were worried about.

We're now scheduled for a c-section next Thursday. Advice and positive experiences much appreciated.

Do you want to see the birth? Ask for a mirror ahead of time and someone to hold it. That's the advice my mother gives people for c-sections - she convinced her hospital to install one in the OR actually when she was planning her 3rd and only planned c-section. She said that was her best birth by far. It's definitely easier to have a planned c-section than one at the end of a long labor.

I've always been terrified of needles and surgery, so I definitely don't want to see.

Mollyjade, I hope your delivery goes well! I'm assuming you wanted to avoid surgery, so I'm sorry to hear that it has been scheduled for you. Where are you delivering? I have quite a few northie friends who had c-sections so if you want I can probably rustle up a few who birthed at your hospital and get their advice.

Heh. I feel the same way. Do you have a choice about anesthesia? My mother has opinions about that as well. :)

mollyjade, my sweetheart's sister gave birth by unplanned cesarean a few days ago and she and my wee nephew just went home - mama and bebe are both fine and healthy. I find that pretty reassuring, personally, that even if it isn't a planned thing everything can turn out okay. I hope that helps you a little, too!

If you go into labor sooner will you be able to keep laboring, or do they want you to have a c-section no matter what? My advice is to talk in advance about how to have as many of your preferences as possible still be honored. For example, it is very possible to have delayed cord clamping and pretty much immediate skin-to-skin with your baby in the OR. Good luck!!

Thanks, everyone. Mandycoot, I'll be at Seton Main. So far we've had really good interactions with them.

I didn't think to ask about anesthesia. I suspect I won't have much choice, but I should ask anyway. The OB brought up delayed cord clamping and skin-to-skin, which is good. Baby will be out in 10-15 minutes, and then gets to hang out on my chest for the rest of the surgery, assuming everything is OK. Apparently the pediatrician is the one to convince about cord clamping, since they get worried about the baby's temperature in the cold surgery room, even though he'll be on my chest with a blanket. And I can try to breast feed immediately if I'm up for it.

I had a planned c-section for my twins. Since they were breech/breech, there was no choice (unless there had been some miraculous last minute flip!).

The pain of recovery wasn't as bad as I feared it would be. I did take all the pain meds offered, so I'm sure that helped quite a bit. By the time I was released from the hospital though, I didn't need any pain meds (and I wasn't being stoic-- I really just had very little pain by then).

I think it's really important to get out of bed as much as you can and walk around. It's supposed to help speed the recovery.

Take advantage of the longer hospital stay for c-sections and have the LCs visit you a lot!

Someone posted this recently in my mommy group. I know you said you don't want to watch, but maybe there are some other things from the video you might consider? Best of luck!!

Jonah Samual Printz was born at 4 : 24 pm on Monday. He weighed 8 lbs 10 oz, which was much smaller than expected. His blood sugars have been awesome and no jaundice, so far. His middle name (including the spelling) is in honor of my maternal grandfather.
