The size of your baby at birth is fascinatingly mostly related to paternal genetics, but can be influenced by maternal health (diabetes, smoking). For what it's worth, I was almost ten pounds when I was born and was terrified of having a huge baby, and Scarlett was 7 lbs 14 oz. Phew!

That is really interesting, moooo! Brett was 10lbs+ at birth (2 weeks after his due date) and I was 6lbs and change. L measured big on the U/S and they kept predicting she'd be 10lbs, but she was 7lbs 10 oz.

Also, M.Z. I laughed out loud at your belly button comment!

Both my mother AND my mother in law had large babies. I was doomed from the start! ... On that note, though, I didn't really find having big babies particularly bad. Of course, I have nothing to compare to, but like, it didn't destroy my pelvic floor or anything. (E was 9 and M was 9.25, and I'm not a big person.)

both me and my bro were 8ish lbs. all 4 of my MIL's babies were 7-8 lbs.
BP was 5.5 lbs so you never know!

i will say my mom had 2 VERY short labors and once i finally went into labor i also had an insanely short labor though i was also chocked to the brim with induction meds so i thought that was why but my OB seems to think i have short labors.

my 5.5 lbs baby destroyed my pelvis.
ive seriously decided that the size of the baby doesnt really necessarily matter about how painful/hard your labor will be.
i had a 5.5 lbs baby and had an insanely painful birth and my right hip is forked. the OB said it's very likely from pregnancy/childbirth even though i gained not much weight.

so yeah! some peoples' bodies can handle having a large baby and then there are those of us who have tiny babies are are broken after :-P

My husband and his brother were both pretty big (~9 pounds, which sounded even bigger 35+ years ago) and their mother is about 5' and is not the sort you'd say has "birthing hips." Both were born lightning fast. Malka was 7lbs, born right around her due date, and took forever to be born with a multi-day induction and hours of pushing.

I think things like the shape of your pelvis and the positioning of the baby probably make more of a difference in how birthing a small or big baby feels than anything else. There's a higher likelihood of things like shoulder dystocia with bigger babies, but even then there are many more who have no issues being born than those that have issues, and small babies can have those problems as well. And a tiny baby who's sunny-side-up or has their hand up by their face or something is going to be hard to birth. The tininess isn't that helpful if the positioning is off.

That's really interesting about it being mostly related to the paternal genes. My husband (and his bro) were both in the 7-8 lb range. I realize there are a million other factors that will go into labor, but it makes me feel a little better!

I'll hopefully update the birth stories thread at some point but all 9.6 pounds of Little Nettle has landed! She's got a mysteriously cleft chin and a full head of dark hair. I pretty much dig her.

Congrats MT! Nettle!

(E had a cleft chin at some point-- his father does as well-- but it later disappeared. Maybe to return when he's older? Chins are quite mysterious.)
