They can do fluoride varnish as soon as they have any teeth. Sealants are usually done for the 6 year and 12 year molars.

Speaking of teeth when did people start bringing their kids to the dentist?

We read a couple places that before their first birthday they should go.

We got something in the mail that apparently because of the Affordable Care Act all kids 19 (?) and under have dental insurance so our health insurance covers at least something for her.

I was a bit late taking my daughter to the dentist because she was 5. She was checked by the school dentist when she was 4. I totally should have brought her earlier because she has a cavity between her teeth that I couldn't reach and I didn't know how bad it was until she complained about pain. I couldn't see it from the outside and the school dentist was definitely not enough, they couldn't see it. Only an x-ray would have seen it or maybe a dentist who looked properly.

Personally I think it's nonsense to bring your kids to the dentist before 1 years old unless there are special issues. I also breastfeed long term and that protects children's teeth extremely well due to the minerals in the breast milk. Maybe if you use formula you might want to go earlier, not sure. I have a 2 1/2yo that is now just getting his second molars, meaning the molars will be touching and I won't be able to see so well what's going on in his mouth. When they've come through I want to start taking him to the dentist.

You can fill children's baby molars whenever it's needed. They typically do no work on the tiny baby teeth in the front and if it gets bad they will just pull them out. Obviously small children don't sit still so they give them something to knock them out for a bit then. For older children here they sometimes use nitrous oxide. There are specialist dentists who work on children's baby teeth because you need specialist equipment, like extra tiny drills, etc. Here in Montreal there are only a few dentists that work with children, most don't.

Not necessarily. For the most part, you have a better bet with pediatric dentists, but I feel there are some great general dentists out there that work with kids.

Just came from the pediatrician with both kids - Sierra's final shots til boosters and some boosters for D as well as that TB test (she needs this for school). I feel very lucky to have a dr who isn't freaked out by how small Sierra is (at nearly 2 years she's only 22 lbs and 32inches tall, which puts her in 17% for weight and 7 for height) and says he "admires" our vegan diet. This dr is a great change from the dr we had when Dahlia was a baby, who had us freaking out that she didn't have 30 words by her first birthday, because our current dr expects 10 words from Sierra at 2. Such a weird disparity. Ugh but now we have to finally do some blood labs, which we've been putting off forever since our last attempt to get Sierra's blood drawn was an epic fail. Hopefully since she's a year older now her veins will be more cooperative.

So I'm wondering how 22 pounds = 17% for Sierra, while two years and maybe 23 or 24 pounds was "fell off the chart" for us. Hm. Not that our pediatricians were worried about it, either. I wonder what they'll say about three years and 26 pounds.

wow yeah Ariann that is weird! I think 22lbs sounds REALLY light for a 2year old but she was also born small (6lbs 6 oz) and had a lot of checkups that first year where she was barely gaining. This was honestly the first time I can remember percentages being mentioned and I was surprised that she was on the chart at all haha.

i think every dr has a different chart. seriously.

for the pediatrician BP has been just barely 1% for weight and at the cardiologist she was around 5% for weight so i know that's not a huge difference but it's still different. then in my AAP book i think she has yet another %tile.

we have our 12 month visit on friday and im nervous that now that she has been crawling around she has actually lost weight

V hangs around 25% for weight and was around that for her second birthday. Of course, after all these months living out of hotels and not getting enough activity, she's gained a bunch of weight and is now about 32lb (coming up on 3 years in July). Our pediatricians have mostly looked at the trends rather than the percentages themselves - she was consistently tall and lean, so they just accepted that as her body type.

i think this is the important part. our pedi does the same thing. i always have to ask her what the %tile is just because im curious about it and she always make it seem like the actual # doesnt matter (which is doesnt) but that she is following the appropriate growth curve. and so far even though BP has been hovering right around falling off the chart she is following exactly the curve she should be following. there was one visit to the cardiologist where she didnt gain any weight from the month before and they were a tad concerned but then the next time she went back she had gained over a pound so it really is all about trends.

im really curious to see what her weight will be tomorrow now that she is crawling.

Yep. "Following their curve" seems to be the most important thing to most of the health professionals around here too. My frustration sometimes though with the percentiles part is that if you're say below the 5th or above the 95th, there's this sort of nebulous area. F's growth seems to have slown a lot during this first part of her third year, so we shall see but for now we still get "wow, she's really big" all the time. :p A week or so ago, she went on this nursing jag for a couple of days and my mom said that she was probably getting ready for a growth spurt. Lordy.

BabyPunk had her 12 month well baby visit today and my fears of her losing weight did not come true. she gained a tiny bit. she is 15.5 lbs now. she looks skinny to me because she grew vertically AGAIN! the medical asst does all the weighing and measuring before the dr comes in and when the dr came in she was like "i want to measure her length again she seems really long"
she is indeed about 29.5 inches long and i said to the dr "you remember my husband right?"
my husband is 6'5 and weighs like 160 lbs if that so yeah. tall and skinny.

she's still hanging out in the 1%tile for weight but she is following her curve perfectly. she didnt tell me her %tile for height but my husband must have looked it up somewhere online because whatever he looked at said she is under 5% for weight and 75% for height :-P

so overall she's doing really really well especially considering our struggles during the first year.
i do have one issue id like to see if anyone else has experience with. she doesnt eat ANY solid food or baby food or ANYTHING besides breastmilk. she will NOT let ANYTHING near her mouth. she doesnt mouth things either. the only thing that goes in her mouth is occasionally (but not very often) her fingers
she had to take meds starting at 3 weeks old because of her heart and i dont think they tasted very good.
she also would gag on the vit D drops. and then starting at 9 months they had me start giving her iron drops which apparently taste heinously disgusting based on her reaction. it got to the point where in order to get her to take the iron drops i would literally have to hold her down and squirt it in and she would gag on it so i stopped.
i think she has a very sensitive gag reflex too so all these things compounded has made her not want to eat anything or have anything near her mouth. so we took a break on trying to spoon feed her (we never forced food on her but we tried to convince her to eat) and we stopped all drops unless she needed some tylenol for her teeth pain.
she has been developmentally behind in literally every aspect so it makes sense she is behind in eating too.
the dr seemed ok with this but said nutritionally she is going to need to start eating soon now that she is mobile and to keep her posted. we are going to start offering her food and making it fun and just going on her own pace and hoping she will eat when she is ready.
my MIL breastfed 4 kids and is super into BFing and isnt worried about her in the least. she thinks she is getting all her nutrients from breastmilk and will eat when she is ready. she has a friend who is a La Leche League leader and she said pretty much the same thing. im not 100% sure i agreed with everything they said though as they said to just up my iron intake but from what i understand there is only so much iron to get out of breastmilk regardless of my diet. the LLL leader did say that the iron in breastmilk is more easily absorbed than through food so there is that. she was only mildly anemic so it's not a huge worry but not something i want to ignore.
the dr said to stop the drops all together as it was obviously only making things worse.
i have heard many people who had kids who barely ate anything until they were older so im thinking we are ok.
in fact i was just talking to someone at the park who was randomly telling me her son was very small too and said he didnt like food so even though we are behind i think we are ok.
i just worry about stuff like this because she puts literally nothing in her mouth.
i was reading about sensory disorders and the part about sensory issues with the mouth described her perfectly but from what i was reading it seemed like sensory disorder sydrome or whatever it's called is several things combined and she only has the eating part. it said kids with sensory issues usually have issues with how things feel and tactile issues which she does not. she loves feeling everything. and it also said those kids are easily overstimulated and id say she is the opposite. the more new and different things i can show her the better.

also at her 9 month visit the big concern was she wasnt crawling or even showing any interest in crawling and the dr asked me if i wanted to have the early intervention people come back and i said no and sure enough she's crawling up a storm now.

other than that she is doing good. she's had a stuffy nose for like 2 months straight and i said that i was worried she inherited some of my allergies (which were BAAAAD when i was a kid) and the dr said it could be that but that it might be from teething so im crossing my fingers it's that because i hadnt even considered that

I dont want to post and skip all replies I havent read yet, but my kiddo is not well and it is bedtime. I will come back to this, I swear.

Anyway, I just took E to the doc for ear pain and a bad cold/cough. Turns out, his red ear (seen at his 18month appt last Friday) has turned to a full on ear infection, even after a full week of doing the garlic oil thing. And he has illness induced asthma. So we are on Ventolin breathing treatments until further notice... Fun times ahead!
We both did not sleep at all last night. He was up literally every 3mins trying to nurse, in pain, crying and wheezing and coughing, and just unwell... No matter what I tried, it did not work. So I am beat. Early night for both...

so this isnt really a kid update but i have sort of kind of reentered the working world. my husband's company needed someone to do part time bookkeeping and just enter their invoices because one of the owners was doing it and doing it badly.

so they said they would have 4-6 hours a week for me and i could do it from home. i knew it would be less than they imagined and over the past 2 weeks i eked out 5 hours and that includes cleaning off my desk and setting up an "office" area where i can work.
but i really couldnt ask for a better situation. i know the people since my husband works there. i know what im doing its all stuff ive done before. i can do it from home at night when BP is with my husband playing and extra money is always a GOOD thing.

im hoping to grow it into a real part time job by the time BP goes to school or will allow me to leave her with my dad for a few hours.

the only thing is BP is basically my own personal stalker. i will leave her with my husband happily playing but she always eventually ends up crawling down the hall to find me and then is under foot and throwing all my papers everywhere. i literally cant ever get 5 mins to myself.

we literally left a bunch of other random papers on the floor in my "office" area so she can fling those around instead of my actual work.

the only kid update is BP turned 13 months yesterday and is cutting another top tooth!
also she pulled herself up to standing on my husband a few times!!
she's getting into such a fun age. she just tears around the house or plays with her toys and although she is still totally "Unimpressed baby" she seems her own version of a happy baby and she has one stuffed bear she drags everywhere. i almost cant wait for her to start walking even though it means some other scary things because i think it will be so damned cute

Freya turned 2 1/2 (whoa) on Monday. She is changing right before our eyes, it seems, becoming this very social creature, for the most part, as opposed to her previously pretty reserved self. She continues to sleep little (though this may be changing even just this week), but is happy regardless. She's still crazy verbal and in love with ducks. Some of our favorite developments are finally being able to ride her strider bike well and drawing "people". She and her bff, who are the same age, have really just fallen in love with her lately and it's amazing to see them playing together and giggling like mad over "secrets". She's starting to look ever more like a child than a toddler...her weight's held steady at about 39 lbs for a long while now, but she's right at 40" (just over a metre, officially). She is exhausting, but so much fun!

What a cutie Freya is!!!

Sebastian had his 2.5 week check-up. Despite his rough week of feeding with the lip/tongue tie revision he has gained nearly 2 lbs since being born. I was flabbergasted. Unlike his brother who was always above 90% for height and weight, this guy is 15% for height and 50% for weight...I'm thinking round will be his shape ;)

so we just got back from our very first official vacation as a family (with a kid). we've taken road trips with her before but this was our first vacation. we went to Cape Cod for a week. it was a great week! we really lucked out weather wise so early in the season.

BabyPunk is a challenge in certain ways like never sleeping and refusing to eat anything whatsoever and being barnacle baby but man is she a great travel baby. no complaints there. she is SO GOOD wherever we take her.

we also found something that impresses unimpressed baby:

SAND!

Image

she was a little unsure of the frigid Atlantic ocean but like her mama she still went in like the tough New Englander she is

Image

she was so impressed with the beach she passed out asleep (two days in a row). i began wondering if my kid had been switcherooed

Image

we took the ferry over to Nantucket and spent the day one day. we rented bikes and that greatly pissed BP off. she screamed bloody murder for a good 5 mins then passed out asleep then when she woke up she was fine. we couldnt find a bike helmet to fit mini-baby though

Image

she started the week being really good at pulling herself up to stand and being sort of a beginner cruiser and VERY slow at walking with help. by the end of the week she was cruiser: level expert and can walked supported really fast. it was insane the difference one week made. when we got home all of a sudden she was tearing around the house. she will be walking on her own soon!!! (scary!)
