I just have to say that socialism is awesome. In San Diego we did different activities privately and it was always $15-20/class. Here I just went to the military base and signed V up for soccer ($60 for 6 weeks of practice + 4 games + pictures, and based on our gymnastics experience may include a shirt as well) and ballet ($35 for what I think is a 6 or 8 week session, I'm not even sure exactly because for <$6/class, whatever).

It would be nice to see that level of mild subsidy available more broadly.

Jonah started daycare yesterday, and as far as I can tell it went great. The staff sent a note home saying he didn't nap well. But he's not on a napping schedule yet, so I'm not surprised he didn't magically fall asleep when they put him in the crib at the proscribed time. He wasn't especially fussy that night, so I'm not going to worry about it.

I had fun filling out the school forms. "What do you hope for your child to learn this year." How to sit up and what it's like to have food in your mouth.

We're shooting big.

Sweet, now I have an idea of what I should be aiming for with Little Nettle. There was one website that said I should already be doing foreign language vocabulary drills with her. I think it's important to expose kids to the sounds of different languages early on but vocabulary drills with a six week old seems too intense for me.

My son turned two today! And he's had so much sugar today! We kind of spoiled him a bit. But I made him triple chocolate chip cupcakes for his birthday cake and his dad kept giving him these buckwheat cookies that he likes. I tried to feed him sweet potato for dinner but he wanted nothing to do with it.

Vax is almost walking (Beety was a later walker, too, I'm not worried) and has done 7 steps by himself and can walk holding my hand.

And Beety's adult teeth have started coming in shark style. This pic is from a few weeks ago. The 2 baby teeth fell out within a fortnight of my taking this photo. How much does the tooth fairy pay where you guys live? Beety got £1 for his first tooth and 50p for the second (he didn't know what to do with the money, so he gave it to Mr Crabby to put in his bank account):

That's exactly how I felt! Now that the baby teeth are out of the way, the shark teeth have moved forward and look pretty normal.

My son turned 2 on August 26th. His extended family SPOILED him! He has so many toys now. They have been keeping him busy lol. I am in the process of putting old toys away. However, he keeps finding the box that I put them in and takes them right out.

For his birthday, I made the triple chocolate cupcakes from Vegan Lunch box. They were amazing. I made them into a layer cake. I had to make two cakes because we had two parties for each side of the family. On my side, we were celebrating three other birthdays so there were four cakes! My sister in law made an awesome chess board cake for her son, and I would have had a piece if it were vegan! But now I have a lot of cake left over. Had a slice this morning for breakfast. Yay breakfast of champions. Gonna be sick of cake soon though.

Mmm cake. Aww I love that he got spoiled.

So Addie is teething! She has four canines trying to break through. Also, she's become mobile, possibly unintentionally. I don't know if she's scooting because she's trying to roll over or what. Her eyes have started changing color; they lost the steel blue color and now they're steel hazel if that makes sense.

I managed to get V into school! I finally was able to reach the preschool we'd heard good things about, and yesterday was their first day open. We took a tour, signed up on the spot, and her first day was today! I'd been planning on maybe doing half days or every other day or something, but the way they price it is basically full time, and the price was so low I wasn't going to quibble. This is going to make those of you stateside pretty jealous: the 8am-4pm program five days a week, and I think it even includes Saturday mornings (I didn't notice this in the schedule until I got home - she's got soccer then anyway), is <$200/month. Unbelievable!

Anyway I dropped her off an hour and a half ago, and was looking for something to keep me busy until it's time to go get her again. I decided to sort through her clothes since the dresser has been a big jumble of 12Mo-3T and it's impossible to sort it while she's around. But of course putting all those clothes away gave me the sads. Mostly it's the 18mo and 24mo stuff, since I have so many memories from that time. My husband was deployed and it was both difficult and rewarding, just the two of us. I'm sure it will be even tougher when Julia grows up. It's weird because I really haven't felt this way much before! All the previous V clothing purges felt like no big deal because she was so much more capable and learning so much that it felt like a new adventure constantly.. I guess part of it is having a 3 year old where sometimes eevvvverything is a struggle, and having a newborn again and seeing how gosh darn cooperative and happy babies are makes me feel really nostalgic.

Moral of the story: the first day you drop your kid off at school, LFMF, don't spend it doing something nostalgic. Just mop the floors or something!!

ahh all the back-to-school stuff! D starts kindergarten tomorrow and it's really a mixed bag o' feelings for me: she's totally ready to have some more academic-type learning, as she is reading short words and very interested in it. But I know I'll soon be frustrated by the tons of homework and common core stuff they seem to be forcing on these tiny kids! Her school is awesomely close to our house which will be nice if she can finally meet some kids who live nearby. BUT I'm still bummed that it's such a long day (8:20 to 2:30) because she's never been outta our sight for more than like 3 hours at a time...not to mention that she and Sierra will genuinely miss each other. D is just not the most social person, especially with other kids, and she just doesn't seem to form strong attachments to kids her own age, but I guess being forced to be with them all those hours may help (OR make her feel bad about being a loner). Lastly, I resent the strict uniform policy - yes, because it will be difficult to convince her that she can't wear beloved dresses everyday but also because the school demands white or light blue for shirts. Oh it's gonna be sooo much fun to keep those unstained!

All of a sudden Giles decided he was done with the highchair. We had a space saver kind that sits in regular chair and can be pulled up to the table so I thought he would be in it for a long, long time. I came home yesterday and there he was looking so grown-up sitting at the table dipping his french fries in ketchup.

Nothing else new with Giles. Still no words! We have been approved for a reevaluation for OT because he obviously has sensory issues that need some help!
