Oh, the joy of scrambling to buy other people's kids presents! Like when the party starts in half an hour! And it's New Year's Eve! And there's one place you know is open, for another 20 minutes! But by then everyone's arguing with everyone else, and you end up going to the drug store and buying a Toys R Us giftcard! And your son is embarrassed because it's a dumb gift! And the whole time you're thinking, "These people are loaded and the kid already has everything!" And you feel petty, but still angry!

we always say no gifts for our parties just because we have so much stuff already. Inevitably, wonderful and well meaning people bring gifts, and it is really awkward for everyone. especially those who listened and didn't bring them. ugh.

Let me rant about this too, while I am at it. My husbands parents have never been to one of my son's birthday parties AND they just emailed and said they wouldn't be coming to Zeldas. what the fizzle?!!! I think out of three years of birthdays only ONE of our siblings family came. Out of 5 aunts/uncles and 4 grandparents. Would it kill them?

Yeah, the whole present thing should just go away.
My friend has a little boy who recently turned 3. She lives with her parents, and they are very wealthy. Huge house, mountains of toys, he has absolutely EVERYTHING he needs and more.
I am not wealthy. We get by, but I don't have oodles of money to spare. It drives me nuts that I'm spending $30 on something her kid won't even notice after he opens the power wheels escalade his grandparents got for him.

I think this year we're just going to have cake for Malcolm with the grandparents if they'd like to come.

this is why I'm glad my kids have no friends! My son thinks he does but he can't remember their names and the snooty parents shooo their kids away when they try to introduce T's mom. we just exchange gifts with their cousins.

We specify a $15 limit on gifts when we send the inivitations (as I refuse to pay more than that anyway), and also state that donations to the local foodbank in lieu of gifts is fine. Most people do both.

I usually buy a book or two. Nothing fancy, but good for all kids no matter how much other stuff they have.
