This whole talking thing is just killing me. Ada started thanking us for doing things. I got a "thanks mommy" twice after getting her water today, after changing her diaper, and after passing her the lid to her crayon container that she asked for.

Oh my God. I'm getting so excited for the talking! Malka is saying "where is..." now. That's her only sentence that I can pick out, but there are definitely long strings of almost-words coming out of her mouth now and she is just constantly moving and talking and gesticulating.

Sashi, that's awesome. I can occasionally force a "PEEEEAAAAAAS?" out of Violet, but that's about it as far as politeness goes!

I'm finding it fun to watch how V's play is evolving. The dolls get fed and put to sleep and they get to sit in a pot on the play stove and watch while she "cooks," lucky them!

Vi also does the long strings of babbling that seem like she's trying to tell me a story and sometimes it'll sound exactly like something sensible in English but I'm not sure if that's coincidence or what.

The politeness cracks me up, too. Inez has been saying thank you ("canky") for a long time, but now please ("peas") and excuse me ("scoo me") are in the mix as well. It's pretty cute.

She is super into pretend play lately, as in she will tell me she is a duck or a dog or a character from a book and I have to address her as such. Sometimes she gives me a character, too. We ran all of our errands yesterday in character.

Malka made her doll sign "more" while she said "more," then kissed and hugged the doll, put her down for a "nap" and shhed us with her finger to her lips and said "baby sleeping.". Almost died of the cute.

Awww. Little kids playing with dolls is the best.

M does this thing where he swaddles his stuffed animals and baby doll... His expression is so... Conscientious while he does it, like wrapping this thing up and hugging it is Serious Business. I love it.

The other day E was really sad because his best friend at school (a girl in the classroom for the age group above his) told him she didn't want to be best friends with him any more. While hugging me and telling me how sad he was, he looked up and said, "mama, will YOU be my best friend?" Aw buddy. Of course I will be.

(His friend was back to wanting to be his best friend the next day though.)

oh man, i had forgotten about this. our one daughter didn't talk so we all learned some basic signs- the stuffed animals were always signing things. once we found FC making the dog sign "more".

I fell asleep with Leela snuggled up in my arms for 2 hours of her 3 hour nap. It was heaven. I had this tiny, warm, snuggly human in my arms and I kept squeezing her and thinking that we were so close to each other that she could be part of me, like she used to be again. I would hug her tight and she would snuggle me back in her sleep. It was magical. And then I woke up to her kissing my face.

I am in awe at how much I love her.

Awwww, T. That's the best.

E & I had a really hard day together. Lots of boundary testing and button pushing and ugh. When i tucked him into bed just now, he got the saddest look on his face and said: "Mom, I want to not say what I said. I want to have not said that mean thing to you." and I felt so strongly for him because how many times in my life have I said something in the heat of the moment and wished I could take it back? So I told him that, that we all do it sometimes and the only thing you can do is say sorry and try not to speak unkindly in the future. And then we hugged a lot.

I dunno, it was just such a tender human moment to me.

That is so sweet. How amazing that he had the perspective to think back on what he had said, and the sweetness to say how he felt. I've kinda felt like a jerk lately too, so I know how he feels. I'm sorry you had a hard day.

c&s that is awesome...we've got a lot of button-pushing and general snottiness going on over here but every once in a while she seems to get that I'm really upset by her words and actions and it's kind of revelatory for her I think. E sounds so, so sweet.

F. Suitcase just came up from her puppy shower to say, let me know if we get too loud. And it's only 7:15. She knew I had a rough day. Thoughtfulness! Aw!

After nap, lying on the bed with F, exhausted after a hellish night of something like 6 wakings, me spacing out a little:

"Mommy. Mommy. Mommy. Mommy. Mommy. Mommy."
(crawls closer)
"Mommy. Mommy. Mommy. Mommy. Mommy. Mommy......"
me: "Freya"
Freya: "cuddle"

heart melts

We were at Rutherford Pancake House and saw 2 deaf diners signing to each other. Leela was so delighted to see someone else signing, she walked over and just stood there and smiled this big grin at them, and watched them going back and forth. I have that same feeling of goofy recognition when I hear someone speak German or French, and I love that she shares it. Guess we're going to have to learn more ASL. :)

I also love that she signs along with me when we sing 5 Little Monkey's Jumping on the Bed.

Inez insisted on wrapping her Mother's Day present for my mom by herself, which was pretty cute. And now she is obsessed with "wrapping" "presents." Mostly wrapping things in dishcloths, bringing them to you and asking, "Want a prez?" I have been given an apple and multiple cork trivets.

just in general, i had the nicest day with my 4 year old yesterday. it was a sweet day, with no 4 year old attitude outbursts and it was such a nice change. i mean, he's an awesome kid 90% of the time, but there are usually a couple of shit-fights in every day, yesterday-nada. so nice. he even went to his first dental check-up and he was cool about it.

Kimba, baby hugs are the best! Henry has started hugging the other kids in his class and it makes my heart explode with cuteness.

M is really into hugs and kisses. Sometimes he and E get stuck in this hugging loop. I really love it.

Usually I sing E songs at bedtime but lately he just wants me to snuggle him so we can chat a little more before he goes to sleep.

M is super into books now and will bring me a book, hand it to me, climb up into my lap and snuggle in and wait. He is so matter of fact about it, like now it is time to READ. It cracks me up so much.

Inez was pretending to be a doctor and listening to my chest and her stuffed dog's with her "telescope" (aka stethoscope, aka my phone charger). Then she put it on my belly and said, "Oh! Hear that? You got a baby in there!"
