I am so sorry to read your update! Sending some love and hugs to you and your kitty. I'm hoping that once the vet can identify the problem, your kitty will demonstrate the amazing resilience that many cats have (even oldsters). In the meanwhile, I'm glad that you are there to provide love and support, which are both their own kind of medicine.

I just saw your last update and am glad to hear your kitty is hanging in there!

We had a cat go through something very similar. Ultimately it turned out that something triggered a flare-up of Irritable Bowel Disease, which we didn't know he had. Once we figured out what it was it was manageable, but it was really difficult to diagnose because it didn't show up in any of the bloodwork or x-rays. It's so tough with cats because they won't show how much they're hurting until things are really bad! I hope once you both get through this crisis you'll be able to manage her condition (whatever it is) going forward and not have to do this again. Keeping both of you in my thoughts!!!

Thanks you for keeping her in your thoughts you guys! We still don't know what it is, which is so frustrating. She has high globulin levels, but that's it. Kidneys, other organs, etc. appear fine. Other than the globulin, she doesn't really have other FIP symptoms. Ugh! I just want to know what the problem is! She's on appetite stimulant (mirtazapine) now to encourage her to eat and she's doing well and she hasn't thrown up at all.

thanks for the update, Lobster. i was thinking about her and wondering if they had figured anything out. cats are so mysterious when it comes to illnesses/disease/disorders/etc. our kitteh Ms. Cat had a lot of ongoing issues - we did every test they offered and suggested and her "levels" came out normal for all of them. they just couldn't find anything wrong with her. she passed about a year later, but she was about 18-19 years of age. i'm sorry they haven't been able to pinpoint what's going on, but i'm glad she's doing a bit better and hasn't thrown up at all. that's good news, indeed.

That is a pretty positive update - eating and not puking are good things. Hopefully once some food gets going in your cat's system, the appetite will kick back in naturally. Continued good thoughts for you and your kitty.

She's still eating well!

Her medication is supposed to be administered every 72 hours. I was supposed to give it to her this morning, but I wanted to see if she would continue to eat without it (the medication is only to encourage eating). So far so good! She ate her dinner like a pro.

This makes me so unbelievably happy.

I'm terrified it's a chronic condition and perhaps her flare up is gone for now but will return, but there's not much I can do about that I suppose. So frustrating not to know what's wrong with my baby, I just want to make her better!

I'm so happy to hear she is eating. That is definitely a huge victory worth celebrating. Does your vet have any other ideas, any other tests to run? I know it's frustrating not to know what's wrong. Could it have just been a flu/infection/virus of some sort?

Yay, I'm glad she is doing better! Keep eating, kitty! Not knowing what's going on is the worst. SO frustrating. I hope this was just a one time blip and kitty is fine from here on out!

She got sick right after I had the flu. The vet thinks I'm crazy, but doesn't that seem weird? I was really sick and laying on the couch for 4 days with a fever. Chloe (my cat) was laying on me most of that time. And then all of a sudden she gets sick. I don't know if that would raise her globulin levels though.

I hope kitty feels better.

I believe that the only animals that can transmit the flu with humans are birds and pigs, which is why your vet doesn't believe it. It'd be very odd if it was something passed between you two.

Lobster, I'm a molecular biologist, I can almost guarantee you that your virus did not infect your cat. Right now the only active flu I know of that can pass from human to cat is the Avian flu that was problematic in China a couple of years ago. Flus of certain varieties that can infect pigs, birds, and ferrets are the ones that most often cross with humans. Cat flu not so much.

Ha, okay, consensus seems to be that there's no way that happened.

I haven't updated this thread in awhile. Anyway, it turns out Chloe has FIP. She is not doing too well and I'm taking her in to he euthanized this morning. The last couple of days have been rough on her. There's not much more we can do and her quality of life isn't very high any more. It's heart breaking, but I don't want her to suffer.

Ugh this sucks. :(

Her appointment was early this morning. I made her a comfy bed on the kitchen table so she could look out the window yet still lay down. She looked so peaceful, calmly surveying the outdoors. Here's a photo I took...



As awful as the visit to the vet was, the vet and the techs were really nice and sat with me and Chloe for awhile just chatting and calmly petting her. She was so weak, but she was still trying to purr.

I came home and burst into tears. Everywhere I look are her favourite resting spots and things that remind me of her. My 1 year old cat is pretty distraught, mostly because she misses having another cat to play with as she is very active. I am trying to give her lots of attention.

Thanks for the condolences everyone. I know it was the right thing to do and it will get a bit easier with time, it just hurts so damn much right now.
