This thread always makes me so sad because I go on animal rescue sites and have to see all the pets I can't have :(

Been browsing ones local to my area and it's so sad how the majority of the cats that are up for adoption are black cats! People please adopt black cats, they are lovely and not bad luck or anything, I promise!

I mean look at Fruitie, lovely old dear at 13 years of age, her owner died and nobody wants to adopt her as she has a wonky ear and is deaf:

Image

Or Scala, 9 years old, who was rescued as a stray along with a group of other cats, who lived at the shelter together for a while, but since she was the youngest of the bunch by a long way they've all died and she's left alone :(

oh, sweet bucktooth! She reminds me of Molly <3 so good to know that even though Molly is gone, snaggletoothed pugs still rule the world.

This is Mimi!: https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/35603715

I fostered her for #4days4life, a LA shelter initiative over the 4th of July to make room in shelters for animals spooked by fireworks and cut down on euthanizing perfectly adoptable animals. She is an absolute gem! She's a 10 month old MinPin/Chi pup, and loves to play almost as much as she loves to cuddle up on your lap. Housebroken, great on a leash, gentle, and has a big heart.

Image

I just had to return her to the shelter today (sadness overfloweth), because she has an adoption event this weekend at the Echo Park Lotus Festival (yay!). If she's not adopted at the event, I'm going to try to get the shelter to upload some way cuter photos I have of her. Ugh, I love her so much.

I've got a huge heart crush on Harlee!
http://www.arfontario.com/project/harlee/

I want to go meet her, but we are on a trip the first week of September and won't be able to take a dog home until mid-September, so...I'm selfishly hoping she's still available then.

OH MY GOD PP THAT BEBE

I think it is mandatory that you go meet her, and just explain the situation. A lot of rescues will be very appreciative that you don't want to give a dog a jolty transition (IE taking her home, then boarding her for a week, which could be very upsetting for her) so they would probably be willing to let you adopt her, but then pick her up later. Especially since it looks like she's in foster care--that's much less of a drain on the shelter, from what I understand.

DO IT. Meet her. Pet her. See what she is like! Rescues want pups to go to the best possible home and that home could be you!

Pp, she is gorgeous and from her bio sounds like she would fit in with you (from what I remember you have a cat, she's good with cats, and she would be the only dog) and she likes to snuggle, play fetch etc. <3

Can't hurt to meet her.

She's gorgeous <3 One thing I would warn against, if she is dog aggressive you might find it pretty stressful, it might be a big undertaking for your first dog. If you do go to see her make sure you ask about how she reacts to other dogs. I've known people who can only walk their dogs at night because they're so aggressive towards other dogs.

Thanks for the insight, fezza! This is all new language for me so that's super helpful! <3

No worries, it's not to say look for the perfect dog, but some shelters are happy to pass a dog with big issues on without properly preparing the new parents. I think there is a limit to what a first time dog parent should take on. Certain issues can be stressful to deal with and before you know it, you can be in an exhausted circle of dog/human stress xx

She's pending adoption :( Which is obviously SUPER YAY for her but I'm kind of heartbroken! We are pre-approved to adopt through that rescue now though -- we went through the (long and thorough!) interview process over the last couple days (seriously I'm impressed at how thorough it was). I told them I really like Harlee, but we agreed that we would assess the situation when we get back from vacation to see what doggles are currently available at that time.

Aw, I know that pain! Don't worry- it means a great home for them but more importantly it means that there's just another doggle out there who is even MORE perfect for you and hasn't made his/her way to you yet! <3

This is so important to remember. I'd definitely ask what support they could provide to help you with any issues and see if there is a plan B if she's not a good fit for your home.

A friend of ours adopted a dog who was so dog aggressive that it became untenable for her to walk the dog with her children, because the dog needed so much attention to stay safe. And then the rescue just made her feel terrible about not being able to handle it and just shamed her instead of helping. I think the more you iron out these kinds of issues in advance the better.

This is the attitude I keep trying to take every time I see one of the dogs I love get adopted. Like "I WANTED HIM/HER *infinite tears*" but also "YAY PUPPER GOT A LOVING HOME *squee*"

It's great that you're through the interview process! When you get back from vacation you'll be able to devote your energy to finding the right doggo instead of worrying about all the bureaucracy. Plus, since it was such an intense process, you KNOW they're a good place to adopt from. Awesome!

So, uh, I met THE ONE.

We talked to our landlord and we're going so that my partner can meet this pupper tomorrow to make the final decision. I am IN LOVE. I met him on Saturday while volunteering at an adoption event, and fell so hard in love with him that I brought him to a picnic and then a friend's house afterward. I am so in love it is STUPID.

LOOK AT HIS LITTLE NERD FACE AND FLOP EAR

He's shepherd/boxer/sharpei/other things mutt.

I AM SO IN LOVE

I'm going to name him Finn. He'll be a big boy--probably about 50 lbs (thanks, shepherd portion!).

I am literally nauseous with anxiety about tomorrow going well!
