We woke up this morning to find that our ancient guinea pig gentleman Pingpong had passed overnight. He was very old for a guinea pig, almost 8.

Unlike the other guinea pigs we've lost, his passing was very peaceful and non-dramatic. He had lived through all sorts of health excitement over the years (a huge abscess that we had to have drained 2-3 times, a UTI, on again off again butt impaction), the sorts of things that guinea pigs just don't live through. On more than one occasion, his vet basically told us to start saying our goodbyes. But he always persevered and survived against the odds. In the end, he just got old instead.

He had slowed down noticeably over the past year. We noticed a couple of days ago that he seemed to be limping slightly. No injury that we could find, we think maybe he was just developing arthritis. He kept eating to the very end, enjoying some last special treats like orange slices and dandelions. Last night he ate some orange and curled up in the grass in his enclosure, and this morning he was still in pretty much the same place, just gone.

I will miss him so much. We went through so many things together. He was my first guinea pig, the one who I named before I ever saw him, the one who convinced me that I could get over those freaky red eyes. We traveled across country together, we traveled up and down the Pacific coast together... he was better traveled than some human beings that I know.

I'm rambling. I don't know what else to say. Here are some pictures.

Image

The first summer he lived with us.

Image

With his friend Mister B, who died several years ago now. I remember that when Pingpong had the abscess we were so scared about Mister B growing old alone afterwards. We never thought it would be the other way around. (Though Pingy was not alone.)

Image

Another from when they were fairly young.

Image

Posing for the camera. He used to do this every time I took my camera out. It was like he knew I was going to feed him a treat.

Image

I loved his little feet.

Image

With Ianto and Captain Jack. He outlived sweet little Captain Jack as well.

Image

And here's I guess the last picture I'll ever take of him, after his bath the other night.

Goodbye Pingpong. We will miss you.

I'm sorry for your loss too. I've never lived with a guinea pig, but he looks like he was a great companion. I'm glad his end was peaceful.

I'm so sorry you've lost Pingers. It's tough losing a little one, even when they go peacefully. He looks like he was a happy little chap and I'm sure he loved you just as much as you love him.

I'm very sorry! After an admittedly tough day, this sent me right over the edge with tears.
I am happy he had such a long adventurous life, and that he was lucky enough to find humans who loved him.

Thanks everyone. I know that some of my less animal-considerate (can't think of a better term) friends and family are probably thinking "jeez, why are you so upset over a rodent?" But I feel like I can always count on the PPK to be understanding, and that really means a lot to me.

Yeah, it was quite peaceful (which was nice after the last 2, who died in very unpleasant ways).

I went in to feed the pigs and give them some dandelion greens and water and stuff, and saw that he was sort of dragging one leg and seemed to want to stay in a sort of curled-up position. I've seen enough sick pigs to know that this wasn't good. So I wrapped him in a towel and I got him a little tangerine and took him in the living room and petted him and gave him tangerine pieces. He was still well enough to eat them, but it took a looong time to get through even one piece. His breathing was kind of raspy and still wanted to stay curled up.

I held him for a while and then put him back in his house with the rest of the tangerine and some romaine in reach. He curled up and was nibbling when I left him. In the morning he was in the same place, just still. There was a lot less tangerine left and the other pig doesn't like it, so, you know, he died doing what he loved-- eating everything in reach. It looked like he was asleep, just not moving.

He was a good pig. He was the biggest pig any of us had really ever seen. He just kind of kept growing...

Here he is lurking in the grass:

Here he is pancaked out:

It's hard to get a sense of scale there, but he was a pretty good-sized puddle of fuzzy pig.

Sweet little Pingy. I'm so sorry he's gone. How lovely that he had such a long live, basking in your affections. And how wonderful that he got to have such a sweet piggy passing ... cuddly in his little zone with snacks to munch on. Love to you all!!
