As of 15 minutes ago, I am Pepper's new mama! I met this little doll when a coworker began fostering her through a rescue. This group is amazing, they are a roving rescue that goes to high-kill shelters all over California and rescue dogs from euthanasia. Pepper (or as she used to be known, Maybelle) was rescued from Fresno just days from death. As I've been quipping in my elitist liberal Bay Area style, she was saved not only from death but from a fate worse than death: life in Fresno. I have no idea why or how she ended up in the shelter, but she appears to have been someone's pet, because she is so affectionate, well-behaved, and potty-trained! She is by all appearances a longhaired dachshund mix, about 2 years old and 8 pounds, and has had a litter (but was spayed last week). She has made nary a peep in the two weeks I've known her expect to play-growl with other dogs and to whimper when her foster mom left today! When you start petting her, she is blinking her eyes shut and nodding off in seconds. She is a sweetheart, and she's mine!

Yea!! Love her! And I love the name Pepper for a dog. She seems like a sweetheart! She's very lucky to have you for a momma.

Aww! I love her. Please take lots of pictures and let me live your two-dogness vicariously.
Doesn't Fresno have some incredibly high euthanasia rate for companion animals? My dad adopted a cat from a rescue group in Victoria, BC that brings in cats from Fresno. He had to give the kitty back to the rescue group though, as he somehow developed allergies :(
ANYWAYS- Yay Pepper!

Here are a few more pics of her first full day with me! She pretty much lies like that all the time. She loves belly rubs, and just lays there with her crazy long dachshund belly snaking across the couch and I'm powerless to do anything but cuddle up next to her and rub her belly (which is still soft from being shaved for her spay operation). She's the first truly small dog I've had and it's fun being able to bring her places that I could never bring Molly! And she's so well behaved, it's never a bother. Yesterday we had breakfast and went for a walk with big sister Molly, and then Pepper and I went on BART (her first trip) to a photoshoot for my hairdresser where Maygles and I got to be fancy model ladies. She was super well-behaved (Maygles was, too, but I'm referring to Pepper) and was happy to chill out on the sofa or in her carrier. The only ruckus she ever made was right before we left, I ran into the bathroom and she started whining because she couldn't see me! Later on we got her her official name tag with my phone number! I am still waiting on her records to arrive in the mail, so I don't think she's even microchipped at this point. Molly has her week with my ex now, so it's just Pep and I! She is the best cuddler at night and is super silly and playful in the morning. We've got potty training down. This was such a great decision! I'm so lucky they rescued her from death!

This is why I became a little dog person! When I first got Bonny I could put her in my purse and go into a store and since she was always sleeping, no one knew. I would take her to all of my friends houses and if I had to go to a function or do something that required me to talk to people that made me anxious, I would take her. Fawkes is more independent and doesn't like being held all that much, but I can still use him as a defense mechanism if I need to. If Molly is anything like Chester, she's too old and full of grump to get jealous about not going with mom and the other dog.

Whenever Pepper or any other dog (I dogsat my co-worker's chi-terrier last week) gets playful, Molly gets in umpire mode and bulldozes in there with her "no fun!" grumble. She's just a loveable old curmudgeon- it took a while but she now she wags her tail and kisses my parents' dog Millie when she sees her, so I have faith that she'll eventually learn to love Pepper too!
