i drove into my driveway today and saw a big brown/grey blob hunkered down in my flower garden. the blob turned out to be a turkey. she/he has been struttin around my flower garden all day eating bird seed or digging up my daisies or i dont know. i think it know lives in my daisy patch. is there any reason i should NOT want a turkey friend in my yard? if it's a lady turkey her name will be Henrietta

I'm no expert, but I think I'd like a turkey friend. In my yard he'd have to be about the size of a pigeon, though.

what do turkeys eat? at first i thought it was eating bird seed cause it was pecking around under my bird feeder but now i dunno. it seems to be digging around. and it's also pecking around on my lawn. do they eat bugs and grubs? if they eat grubs it can totally live on my lawn.
it does seem to be kind destroying all my daisies though.
im really confused why it thinks my lawn is the place to be. it presumably came from the woods behind my neighbors house across the street so why it doesnt think underneath their bird feeder and closer to the woods is better is beyond me.
i have two dogs my neighbors have none though they do have 2 kids who play outside alot.
who knows. i am fascinated watching it.

They eat bugs and berries and seeds. Looks like a female to me. The males can be territorial sometimes, but other than that I don't think there's anything negative about having them around. There are lots of turkeys near my work and they're fun to watch, especially when they have cute little babies!

Your new friend is very cute! I wonder if more turkeys will join her. You may be inadvertently opening a turkey sanctuary in your garden. : D

I read a thing by farm sanctuary once where they made the turkeys a thanksgiving meal, one thing was pureed pumpkin in a dish with cranberries on top, like a pie.

So cute! We see turkeys here, but none of them look as happy as your little friend.

Where outside Boston are you? When I lived in Brookline there were turkeys in Washington Square and 911 would get calls about rival turkey gangs. They would also stop the T, and they can be aggressive. If you are near there, I would just make sure to give your new turkey friend a wide berth!

Rival turkey gangs? Now I've heard everything.
(I'm now envisioning an all-turkey production of West Side Story.)

celyn i actually live in Marlboro so im about 45 minutes outside of Boston.
i have not seen Henrietta since yesterday late afternoon/early evening.
she was strutting around my flower garden for a LONG time but then i let my dogs out (they have a fenced in area in the backyard and the flower garden is in the front yard) and i was going in and out of my garage and one of my dogs started barking and she left. the kids across the street were out playing for a long time last night so i think she stayed away from dogs and kids.
havent seen her since. :-( at first i thought she heard the dogs barking and was like "OH HELL NO!!" but i think she will be back as more and more puzzle pieces are falling into place. a week or so ago (maybe even two!) we found a largish poop in the middle of our driveway and we were like what the fizzle IS POOPING IN OUR DRIVEWAY!!! it seemed too big for a cat but we dont have loose dogs around. we saw another poop this morning and i was like AHA!! TURKEY POO! we also found one near our veggie garden. so she's been around when we arent home. probably in the middle of the day when it's quiet in the neighborhood.
im hoping to see her again tonight!

I believe turkey hunting started already, at least in PA, which might explain why she was alone. When I see wild turkeys around here, they're usually in a small group :(

I just saw a turkey this morning on the lawn across the street. I live on a very busy street in a city so I have no idea where he came from. he looks just like your turkey; wonder if they are related :-)

This little guy came into the shelter today! Usually we tell people to leave baby birds where they are and the mother will care for them, but this guy was in the middle of the street, looking lost and scared. Baby turkeys stay pretty close to their mothers when they're this young, so I don't know what happened. I have never seen a baby turkey this tiny before! When the woman brought him in, I actually thought he was a baby chicken at first! We had to google image search turkey chicks before we determined that's what he was. He was cold and sad looking, but he perked up when I put him on a heating disk. Luckily, the local wildlife rehab center had room for him. I seriously wanted to keep him though, and have a turkey friend. He was so adorable!

BABY TURKEY!!! Adorable. :)
Anyway, I used to live a block away from this random old-style country house in a regular suburban town. The owners of that old-style country house had like 4 female turkeys as pets - YES PETS! Those turkeys used to run amok when they found out how to escape from the fence their owners had built. They'd run across the street, drink from the pond close by, and eat the buggies all around. After walking back from a friend's house, I ran into the owner while she was shooing her turkeys back into their fence. She was hilarious, saying, "These girls just wanna have fun!" Then I got Cyndi Lauper's song stuck in my head...
And now anytime I think of that song, I picture 4 happy girl turkeys partying!

not to derail your thread but I was out mowing two days ago and saw my first wild turkey on our property just wandering through the woods on the edge of the yard. I excitedly ran inside to tell the wife and to grab the camera to take some pictures and she mentioned seeing one once before several weeks back. Is there any way to attract them to the property? I want chickens/guinea fowl to take care of the tick problem on our property but I'm not about to go buy them from a breeder and I simply can't take on another animal responsibility right now but a bunch of wild turkeys that can for all intents and purposes care for themselves would be awesome!
