Our cat snuck out and got into our neighbor's yard, where he was promptly cornered by their two dogs. My husband and another neighbor had to pull the dogs off so our cat could escape.

He seems a bit shaken, but not very injured (there is a little blood on his back), so we are taking him to the vet in the morning, rather than taking him to the emergency vet. He is eating and drinking, and seems generally okay. The emergency vet is basically $400 before they do anything - they do a basic $200 fee, a $150 x-ray and a CBC before they do anything, and our local vet is $50 for the visit fee and he tends to be a bit less intervention/CYA heavy.

I feel terrible, because I had gotten complacent and let him hang out on our porch, even though I knew that he wanted to go exploring. And literally it just took a few minutes for him to run into our neighbor's yard and get attacked.

Please send him some good thoughts if you can spare them!

Thank you all for the good thoughts. The vet saw him and he lost a tooth and was more severely bitten than we had realized. They are keeping him to sedate him, look at all his wounds, manage his pain and treat him for infection. They said it was a good sign that he was alert and hadn't had vomiting or diarrhea, so that is great. He has this really weird smell, which they said was from the infection, and I had no idea it could set in so early.

Its going to be $500 to treat him at our very cheap local vet. I feel a bit bad that we didn't take him to the emergency vet last night, but it didn't seem like a life or death matter, and we probably saved a few hundred dollars. When he came in after being attacked, he seemed alert, but scared and stressed and just ran under the bed. He came out a bit later and we saw a few drops of blood, but he didn't seem in pain. He ate some treats and let Leela pet him, so we thought it wasn't too bad. This morning though we saw at least 6 puncture wounds on his back and hips. We really got lucky though - the neighbor's dogs kill feral cats, raccoons and possums all the time.....

Any advice and further good thoughts are very appreciated! I feel so bad for poor Carlito!!!! <3

If he wasn't clearly bleeding heavily I wouldn't have rushed off to the vet either, but it is a good lesson in how well puncture wounds can hide! I'm sure he will do fine but don't beat yourself up too much.

Get well soon, Carlito!

Thank you all for the good thoughts On examination, the vet said that although his hindquarters had gotten "pretty chewed up" none of the puncture wounds went into his abdomen, so they are just deep flesh wounds, and he doesn't appear to have internal injuries or head wounds. We're going to give him abx and pain management and hopefully he should heal up fine (except obvs his lost tooth). Our bill is $360, because there wasn't as much damage as they had feared. I am pretty sure it would have been closer to $800 at the emergency vet.

It was really lucky that my husband was home, because the dogs had gotten to him (not just cornered him, like I had hoped) and had it gone on for a few more minutes, they would have killed him. Our neighbors who own the dog are really nice, but the only person home was their elderly mother, who didn't want to get in the middle of a dog fight - their hound (the one who was primarily involved) is way bigger than Cuddles - around 90lbs. I am so grateful that my husband was willing to get between two dogs to save our cat <3

Now that he is shaved its going to be a lot clearer that he was pretty bitten up, so I worry a bit about how to talk to Leela about it. She has spent the day being worried about her cat friend. I am also worried that I am going to lose it when I see him. It was so scary seeing him hurt, and we couldn't even see how bad it was.

I feel like it was a huge learning experience for me, how fast things can go bad. I couldn't believe how fast infection set in - the smell of Carlito today morning was just horrible. Its just another reminder of how hard life can be for outdoor cats, and that your cat can escape in minutes and find themselves in a very bad situation. We are so grateful that he is alive, and pretty much he is never going on the porch again ever.
