Peckinpaw (3ish years old, healthy) is squinting with both eyes. It started this morning, and I thought he'd maybe just been sniffing at something that irritated his eyes, but he's still doing it. He can open his eyes normally, like when I fed him, and when he was startled, but mostly, he's squinting. I don't think his face is swollen, and he doesn't really appear to be in any pain or significant discomfort, except that he is squinting.

I googled it, and nothing that saw looked like what is going on. I'd like to avoid a vet visit if possible, but I figure if it's still going on tomorrow, I'll call. Anyone had anything like this?

Any discharge from the eyes or nose? Sneezing? Could be eye infection, scratch on the eye, upper respiratory infection... hard to know without any other symptoms.

My late little old man cat had that in one eye once - squinting but totally fine, no other symptoms - and when I took him in it turned out he had kitty herpes in his eye! This is apparently super common even though it sounded crazy to me and was easily treated with drops. If that's what it turns out to be, take heart: easy and inexpensive to treat, though I guess technically there's no cure. It never happened again though.

Raspberrycomplaint, no discharge, no redness, no sneezing or runny nose. He appears 100% fine, except the squinting. He isn't guarding his eye area either - I can pet him around there, and he doesn't appear to have any discomfort.

Is it extra dry in the house? Maybe some mild eye drops with ease whatever discomfort he is having. Or just some sterile saline. We've used both with the birds, with vet approval.

I'd keep a close eye on him for the next couple of days, and call the vet if it doesn't improve or gets worse. It happens a lot with the stray cats we get in and usually it's the first symptom of a cold. We have had a couple of herpes cases and corneal scratches. Could just be some kind of foreign matter in the eye, too.

My dog did this before her big eye ulcer ordeal. But I wouldn't say you'd need to rush to the vet yet no, just definitely keep a check. Ginny's eyeball started to really cloud up a couple days later and that's when I knew it was time to take her to the vet! Try to look at different angles to his eyeball when he's got it as wide open as you can manage. sometimes from one angle you won't see anything and it'll look clear, but from another it'll become apparent.

Did you cut a lot of onions or just one really pungent onion recently? Cooper doesn't react to then most of the time, but occasionally it will have him squinty for hours.

Veto had something similar, and we took him to the vet, who told us it was a corneal abrasion that would just heal up on its own.

Its interesting that it could be one of the first signs of a cold!

Sending lots of good thoughts to Peckinpaw! I hope it all resolves easily and without needing a trip to the vet.

Good luck! One of our cats had squinting once or twice/year. The vet thought it might be allergies so we tried allergy meds and that didn't work. The diagnosis is herpes though. We have to give her eyedrops daily and a supplement for her food. It doesn't sound like what you have but I'd just watch it and see what happens.

I noticed this morning he was favoring one eye more than the other, and, scarily, one of his pupils was dilated more than the other. It's been coming and going. He also seems a touch sluggish. SO, he's going to the vet first thing tomorrow morning. Poor little guy. Hopefully it's just a weird presentation of a cold or a scratch or something that will just clear up.

The different dilation of the eyes is worrying, so a vet visit is definitely a good idea! Milton is very sensitive to smells and his eyes are the first thing to react, but it goes away in a day or so. I hope everything goes well for Mr. Peckinpaw!

Thanks, guys. I hope he's okay too. I'm hoping it's just a scratch or a mild infection that will be easily treated.

Aaaand we're actually going in this afternoon.

The exciting thing is we'll see how he likes to travel on my bike (in the basket in his carrier, of course) for a couple of blocks. My guess he won't like it much but will like it more than the 25 minutes it would take to walk.

So, he's fine, apparently. The vet, who is a cat specialist, said that all of his nerves seemed fine, and that there were no signs of infection. She said that sometimes the different pupils thing just happens, and there's no explanation. She said it's possible he got a little scratch, or that he's getting a cat cold. She said he seems very healthy, so... yay! He also got a rabies shot. And rode on a bicycle.

Okay, I love the image of Burrito Cat On A Bicycle! I'm imagining Peckinpaw in his little red towel, bundled up tight, riding on your handlebars like ET.

I am so happy he's doing okay! Yay for great news and healthy cats!
