My (18 year old) daughter will be mostly in charge of her care and costs, and she'll live downstairs with her. She works at an animal rescue and is really, really good with animals.
We said yes yesterday (we said no a year ago, and promised to revisit in a year.) She's at the rescue now emailing me pictures of a really cute 3 year old looks like a miniature big dog--tan and black. Spayed, microchipped, all the shots, sweet and good with cats.
She'd wanted a fluffy little purse-sized thing, pure white. She also wanted in the past to buy some teacup pure-bred, and let her have babies. She's a lot more mature about animals (and everything else) now. If she hadn't come around to the rescue p.o.v. I don't think we'd have said yes--I never would've bought a dog, but I didn't want her to either. And breeding a dog in her room is obvs out of the question.
Part of me thinks this is insane, part of me is omg dog! The worst case scenario is we end up with more of the care/costs than we want, and I'm cool with that. But I'm pretty optimistic she'll handle things well.
OMG dog! Pics as soon as it's a reality.

This was supposed to be in the yard. Hence explaining daughter's age. Oh, well I guess playgound works too.

Sounds like the situation is about as good as it could be. Yay for little Black and Tan dogs! My chis are b&t so I'm partial ;)
Can't wait for pics and for you to share lots in The Yard, so I can live vicariously through you. I have three dogs but I always feel like I should be adding more (financially, there's no way, but to me 5 is the perfect number)

Aw thanks everybody. She ended up coming home with a puppy she got from a place out in Queens. She's a mini-pin/toy poodle mix, also black and tan, and unbelievably cute and tiny--and will stay small.
