I was told mixing pepper with water would do it, but I haven't tried it yet. Mercedes is pretty good when it comes to trees, she's just bad with knocking christmas ornaments off. Dunno how Maleficent is going to be.

I will be watching this thread because I know we will have issues. I'm thinking it'd be safer to not even attempt to get out the tree now that we have Frisbee. He was destroy it.

Oh man Didy loves the Christmas tree. We put a lot of bells on the tree so we know when he's being naughty, though you'll also sneakily be watching him and he'll just reach out a paw and ring a bell a few times then stop. What concerns me more is that he BITES the lights, and I'm afraid he'll cut himself or eat glass. Both bad. Depending on what you're trying to protect, a SSCAT or other similar compressed air alarm would probably work. We may have to reposition the tree this year so we can have it motion sensor protected because where it usually is, we walk by all the time and it would just go off constantly.

Last year I had two eight month old kittens. I had the tree set up for five minutes before Banana ate a lightbulb. Packed that sucker back up. I don't know what's going to happen this year.

we limit ourselves to unbreakable ornaments and put no tinsel up (if they eat it it can cause obstructions) and use the plastic covered hangies bent so that they don't come off easily. we've given up on having a perfect tree :) But we love that the cats have so much fun with it!

I am putting up my tree next Tuesday. Tuesday night the cats will move into the tree until January.

My cats didn't seem too interested in the tree last year. It's kind of disappointing how apathetic they are. My cat when I was a kid loved climbing up the trunk and we just kept that room off limits unless someone was watching him.

I pretty much only decorate the top half of the tree and have the widest, most untippable base ever made.

The first year I had my kitties (two years ago), I got a cheap plastic tree just to test the waters. I ended up throwing it away after Christmas, because they systematically destroyed it. Last year, I didn't even bother trying.
But I really, really like having a tree up! I wonder if a real tree would be better - less room for them to climb around (the cheap one had a ton of space between the branches). But it may just be a total waste of money and even greater disaster potential than the fake one. Whatevs, I probably won't do anything again this year.

Christmas Ladder will solve all of your problems: The cats loved Christmas Ladder so much that we left it up until February. And we still haul it out without decorations when there are lots of people in the house just so they have a sanctuary.

I have a tiny fake tree that I bring out every year, about 2" tall. Last year I didn't bother with any ornaments on it because my cat lives to destroy anything I deem, "nice." So now it's just a fake evergreen with white lights, which I also like, and she pretty much left it alone.
Last year I also got some some nice mercury glass ornaments that I hung from the ceiling in a corner of the living room with nice ribbon. Try to destroy those, you little jerkface....I mean, cat whom I adore...

I may have to go with a Christmas ladder. We didn't do a tree last year because we were in a very "bah, humbug" mood, but I am sure at least one of the cats would try to climb it. Probably the one who still thinks he can climb the curtains like he did when he was a kitten.

I'm afraid. Our older cat finally stopped bedding down in our tree last year. But this is our kittens first Xmas! We are seriously considering not putting our tree up this year. I like my ornaments too much.

I think I'm going to get a tree just to see if Buhbah will climb it. It might need bait, such as a Panda With Cookie catnip pirate angel at the top.
