I got this in the mail today.

Quote:
Dear Postal Customer,
On November 26, 2013, your cat reached through the mail slot and scratched your letter carrier. Please help protect the letter carrier by restraining your cat or blocking the cat from having access to the mail slot. Should this happen again we will ask that you install a mailbox on the outside of your house next to the mail slot. The Postal Service strives to provide consistent, safe and reliable mail service. We must also ensure the safety and well-being of our employees.

This is actually pretty unsurprising, because Olive LOVES the mail and frequently pulls it out of the mail slot with her teeth, and she definitely scratches a lot. My finger is bleeding right now! Basically she is a menace to society. So...any ideas on how to block a mail slot from the cat? I like that their first suggestion is restraining her. I'm sure she would love that. (I live in a small apartment, locking her out of the living room isn't an option, and I don't think my landlord is going to be down with installing a mailbox...is there any such thing as a small, freestanding one?)

Though preferably whatever I do would be free since I have $40 to last me the next 2.5 weeks. It's not like I get much important mail anyway...is it legal to write "MAIL" on a shoebox with marker?

ETA: No, there are apparently rules about what mail boxes have to be like. But I wonder if I can leave a note asking that the mail just bet stuck behind the screen door?

I considered that, and will if I have to, but I would have to find a tape she won't eat and swallow (can't use packaging tape, she loves that shiitake, and the strings in duct tape worry me) and I would have to untape it and retape it every day I guess? Which seems like an OK short term solution but would probably get annoying fast.

I don't know how handy you are, but repurposing an old bird-cage or some kind of thrifted cage-like thing might be an option? I'm thinking you could cut off the side opposite the cage door, screw the open side to the inside of your door over the letterbox, then open the cage door to retrieve mail?

There are some wire grill type boxes that you can put on the inside of your letter box.

But seriously..... How would a cat get it's paw out a letterbox?! Are they big over in the USA? Any letterbox I've had would be incredibly difficult for a cat to get it's paw out.

Yeah, they're like 8 inches by 1.5 inches. Big enough for giant American magazines and advertising flyers.

I must measure mine. There is a flap on either side of the door and a hairy brush like thing in between the two flaps on our ones.

Would it be too much trouble for you to get a PO box at the local post office and have your mail forwarded to it?

It seems to me, you need something to put up over the mail slot that is long enough for the cat's arms not to reach the opening. How about a cardboard cereal box taped to the door with an open end? Open the flaps from the top and tape it around the mail slot, then cut off the bottom flaps. It'll stick way out of your door, so you'd have to be careful opening it if there's a wall nearby, but it'd be long enough so the cat couldn't reach the mail carrier's fingers. Temporary solution until you can buy one of these (about $20 at the hardware store) and tape off your mail slot.

julibeans used to tear up the mail when the postal worker would drop it through the slot. i'm talking ripping up netflix dvds, magazines, etc. she really dislikes the united states postal service. we left a note for our carrier on the door that said, "please leave the mail at the front door. here's a rock to place on top of it so it doesn't blow away." now, we had a covered porch and lived in an alright area - so it was never rained on or stolen. might not be an option for you, but it's what we did and it worked well for years.

I am researching how to mount a mailbox onto brick and leave no trace and I don't know if I want to deal with filling mortar holes when I move out. I also think I might get in trouble for it in the first place? The post office would be at least a half hour journey each way on the bus, so not really an option. I'll experiment with some sort of cardboard contraption for now, I just need to decide which kind of tape will work and will be safe to use because I know she'll try to eat it. She is obsessed with eating thing she shouldn't and she's vomited up pieces of packaging tape before.

ETA: Here's the little monster herself, looking cute and tricking you into thinking she is not a total terror.

My official plan for tomorrow is to leave a note asking for the mail to be left behind the screen door and apologizing for my cat being a crasshole. We'll see if that's a suitable response.

This is sort of what I was thinking of.
But mostly I just wanted to say that for some reason this thread reminds me of the family who received a jury summons for Mittens Jones, the family cat. They wrote back explaining why Mittens could not serve and received a response from the government stating that the reasons given were insufficient and Mittens was not excused from jury duty! I don't know what happened after that, and I actually just made the name up, but it is a true story, and I hope they took Mittens to the court house to report for Jury duty just to make a point, but I can understand how it might not be worth taking the day off work to do so. So, um, my point is that there are people who have had cats with weirder issues with the government than yours.

Dammit, I'm kind of sad I didn't save this story to tell in person.

She's so cute! I would like to donate both my mail, and my mail carrier to her.

Cute kitty!

The hairy brush stuff that daisychain was talking about that we tend to have in mail slot things over this way is draft excluding.. uh... hairy brush stuff, like so http://www.amazon.com/Satin-Anodized-No ... B00154YAVK

I don't think cat paws could get through.

The one I linked is kind of expensive but they may do a cheaper version somewhere.

As dropscone and Daisychain were saying, you can get letter cages like this: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/p ... 237451.htm (wee picture at the side shows how it is fitted) which would also stop the cat chewing your mail.

Or I have seen mail slots which have a metal flap on both sides; surely she wouldn't manage to manouvere her paw through that and still be able to swipe and scratch?

I think the real questions is, is did they get your cat's gender correct? Focus, people.

(Kitty is super adorable, though)

I'm sorry, but this thread title always makes me laugh.

What would we ever do without our crazy animal friends? They drive us bonkers half the time, but would we have it any other way?

Ditto! Not that I'm glad your kitty is causing problems, but it's kind of hilarious to have to find a way to cat-proof your mail slot.
