I didn't post about it here, but last month we had to euthanize our elderly cat Tiffany because he had lost his meow and was having trouble breathing. Turned out he had a tumor on his vocal cords. In hindsight the cancer explained so many weird things. In December we adopted Milton and he and Tiffany got along okay, but Tiffany seemed more annoyed by Milton than anything, which makes sense now that we know he was dying.

Milton and Tiffany never really played in the short time that they lived together, but I really think Milton would like to have a friend in the house. He is close to a year old in August and is still very feisty and kitten-like. Thankfully he has stopped climbing the curtains, but I can tell he gets bored sometimes when Thomas and I can't play with him enough. Plus he is home alone all day while we're at work.

When I get back from visiting the states this summer we have plans to adopt another kitten, but I'm wondering if gender matters at all in the equation. Obviously Milton has been neutered and whatever animal we adopt will also be spayed or neutered, but does it matter if the kitten we adopt is a boy or a girl? Most of what I've read online says it doesn't really matter - that temperament is more important - but I can't help but wonder.

I know that Milton is a really sweet cat and will welcome whatever animal we bring home. He's amazing and curious and friendly. I just want to make sure we make the right decision!

I've heard that opposite sex cats get along better, though I've always had female cats and they've always gotten along great. I think a lot of it is just the personality of the cats and how carefully you introduce them.

I've had every possible combination of cats over the years and never saw a sex-based difference.

As long as you respect your cat's gender it probably doesn't matter.

If he was older and crotchety I'd be inclined to go with a female just in case he has a "man of the house" complex, but seeing as he is young and frisky anyone to act as a playmate will probably be just fine as far as he is concerned.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Tiffany. I agree that Milton would probably love a kitty friend and that gender shouldn't make much of a difference.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Now the hardest part will be not checking the shelter websites and torturing myself with pictures of cute kittens since we can't try and adopt until after we get back from a vacation this summer. ;)

And I will definitely respect my cat's gender!

as long as the cat is sturdle, that's all that should matter.
