The area I live in do recycling, and the compost is separated in a special bin. Each household gets a plastic container (20 liters perhaps), and paper bags that fits inside for the compost. Then we take the compost out into a large container, paper bag and all. My problem is that my paper bag and plastic container get super disgusting long before it's time to take it out into the large communal one. The bottom gets very wet and the smell is really nasty. If I were to take it out every two days that I would need for it to stay fresh, it would be not even 1/3 of the paper bag full, which seems like such a waste. I keep a lid on the container and try keep liquid out of the bin but water obvisouly gets in there due to veggie scraps containing it.

What to do??!!

Maybe put some sawdust or shredded (compostable) newspaper in the bottom? That's so awesome they do compost collection where you are!

Definitely an idea.

They do that in very large part of Sweden!

Do you have to use the paper liners? Maybe you could just throw the scraps in the plastic bin and every day or two dump them into the large container, then clean out the small bin. I usually put my scraps in cardboard boxes (from cereal, crackers, etc.) and dump that in the big bin every day or so but I also have a small bin with a liner I keep under the sink.

If it were just me, though (no kids) I would have very few cardboard boxes and would just dump scraps straight into the compost bin.

I don't think that would be appreciated, since the idea of the paper bags is to keep the big container "clean".

I keep my compost in the freezer and then drop it off at my CSA every week. Maybe you could keep the paper bag in the fridge or freezer until it's time to take it out to get picked up.

i keep mine in the freezer, too, and then walk them up to the garden whenever i'm headed that way. maybe you could use smaller bags, or leave an empty paper bag in the large outdoor container and bring frozen scraps out to it every few days?

What about using smaller bins that fit in your fridge/freezer that you can empty more frequently? We bought a handful of foodservice storage bins from the restaurant supply store and rotate those from our fridge to our chest freezer until they're full and we bring our compost to my husband's office. I also line the bottom of the bins with parchment paper so gross residue doesn't build at the bottom.

i use a large glass apothecary jar to collect mine. (i used to have a bad fruit fly issue with my past set-ups, but that's pretty much nonexistent now.) also, with the jar keeping humidity in, it means it's super easy to clean, since scraps don't get dried to the sides.

i don't know if they sell these in sweden, but in america, they sell stupid compost kitchen buckets with holes in the lids where a filter would go. ugh. perfect place for the fruit flies to build a home. the apothecary jar realisation was a happy day.

what you can do is collect all your scraps in the apothecary jar and then drain off the liquid just before you're ready to transfer it to the paper bag and bring it out to the bin.

I use a bit of newspaper to help absorb extra liquid and really just take it out way before it's full (especially in summer when it grows yucky quickly). Prepping veggies in bulk helps too, but I'm rarely that coordinated.

i guess you could try putting a layer of compostable cat litter or something at the bottom, if it were worth the expense to you.

In portland, everyone seems to use compostable plastic bags. Have anything like that in Sweden?
