Besides terrifying?

It looks like it has a super long stinger! But maybe (I'm hoping) that's just its body? The whole body including sting-y thing was maybe 3 inches long. It was on my back porch, along with a much smaller baby one. The only thing I could think of was a dragonfly, because of the long body, but I couldn't find one that looked like this. Also I think dragonfly babies look different than adults, and this one's baby looked the exact same, only miniature. I just want to know if I'll die of this thing stings me!

These were Google's suggestions:

THANKS GOOGLE.

A wily spoonsneaker? What the hell, google.

Is it purple or is that just my screen? Maybe a damselfly? They're more delicate looking than dragonflies but still have that stinger looking tail. I don't know what damselfly babies look like though.

The legs were yellowish and the body had maybe a reddish tint, but the stinger was either really dark brown or black. I didn't want to get any closer to it than I had to to take the picture!

I don't know offhand, but there is a great site where you can post your unidentified insect pics and volunteers will try and ID them for you. I'll try and search around on this site to see if I can come up with an ID, too.

I think it's in the ichneumon family, which have a characteristic long ovipositor (not a stinger).

They come in a lot of shapes and sizes, but are very, very cool.

That does look like it! I'm glad they don't sting. Although... it's not going to inject eggs under my skin while I sleep, right? I'm having flashbacks to that picture in the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark book of the girl with baby spiders crawling out of her face.

I don't think that there have been any cases of ichneumon accidental parasitization of humans. They are smarter than that.

I'm glad I looked at this thread, because Google's intelligent results made me giggle.
