My husband found the tiniest baby birds next to our house while he was mowing the lawn. They must have fallen from their nest somewhere, but we don't see a nest. They are alive but their mother is nowhere to be found. I could not think of anybody who would know what to do in such a situation. Should we just leave them? Surely if we do that some cat will get them. I thought if anybody would have some wisdom on this, you all would. What should we do?

I'd try looking online for a wild life rescue in your area and give them a call. if you can't find a number, call the humane society or aspca and they can probably direct you to the information you need.

This nicely sums up what to do when you find baby birds.

I've read to leave them if they're feathered and not injured. They are likely fledglings who are just not great fliers yet. It's totally normal for baby birds to go through a few-day period where they spend time on the ground. The parents are probably located nearby waiting. If it's your cat, maybe you can run interference for a few hours?

I can't find the article that a wildlife rehabber sent me, but this might be helpful: http://audubonportland.org/wcc/urban/babybirds

Sorry I am late to this and most likely you figured out what to do with the baby birds, but I wanted to say that a few weeks back I found a teeny baby pheasant on a walk. Not knowing about leaving it for its Momma bird to find, I scooped it up and cared for it overnight then dropped it into a wildlife rescue the next day. She's doing great now and growing fast. A week or so later I found a baby bird near our flat and remembered that I was SUPPOSED to leave the other one alone, so I shooed it back into the bushes and left it alone, then when I came back from my walk, it had been decapitated by a neighbourhood cat. I know this is anecdotal, but I guess maybe sometimes, go with your instinct if you think it's a better idea!
