I had three fosters this summer for about two months. They went back to the shelter and one got adopted, but two of them got respiratory infections, so they're back in my guest room for now.

I guess the kittens aren't coming to me until Friday morning now. Super bummer.

The tuxedo kittens got delayed again, and now they won't be here until Monday.

BUT, today I started fostering a 2-year old cat named Ida Mae. She came to the shelter (where I volunteer) a few weeks ago, and I have bonded with her. Her former family neglected her and let a mouth infection get wildly out of control. So by the time she came to us last month, it was really, really bad. She has been seeing a vet regularly since being at the shelter, and yesterday went in for oral surgery and ended up having to get ALL of her teeth extracted. Poor thing.

I asked to take her home while she heals from surgery, and now she's here snoozing on the end of my bed. She is SUCH a sweetheart and I am already totally in love with her. I am also so inspired by how affectionate and trusting she is, given her history of neglect and suffering. I'm going to let her meet my resident kitties in a few days, once she's feeling a bit better, and I am considering adopting her if they all get along. Her story just breaks/warms my heart. Here's a pic!

Little Ida Mae is healing up nicely. She only ate 1/2 of a can of food the first day she was here (Thursday), but she ate 3/4 of a can yesterday, which is more appropriate for her weight. She doesn't seem to be in pain when she eats, which is awesome. In a week or two, when her mouth should be healed enough to branch out from pate food, I'm going to try to feed her something with more calories-- maybe a food with gravy in it or something. She's soooo skinny, I think because she hasn't been able to eat without pain for a year. She'll also need a bit of grooming once she's feeling a bit better, because she's matted in a few places, and has random debris caught up in her fur. But I don't even want to try brushing her until she's feeling significantly better.

She isn't hiding under my bed anymore though. She is so sweet and affectionate and loves to snuggle! This morning she wandered out of my bedroom for a few minutes and mingled with my resident kitties, who seemed fine with her. My older cat didn't even flinch, and my kitten just followed her around and politely sniffed her butt. Since that went well, I'll let her out to free roam for the times that I am home over the next few days, then by next week she can free roam always.

I'm curious to see what my home will be like next week, with my two resident kitties, Ida, and the two new foster kittens. :)

This thread is making me want a cat. My problem is that I know basically nothing about having cats.

Awww...there was concern for one of my cats in the past that most or all of his teeth might have to be removed (it didn't happen) but I worried about his eating and told the vet and she said not to worry, they adjust very well from what she's seen in her experience when they have to lose all their teeth. It's better to have their teeth out than a mouthful of painful teefs.

Also, you're giving me hope for when it's time to introduce a second cat to Lovey because Lovey's a wildman and a tough guy! He needs a friend though. I think it'll keep him out of trouble.

The new foster kittens are here! They are scared and haven't ventured out of the carrier yet...so no pics so far. But they are super cute! I'll try to get pics soon. In the meantime, here is one of Ida Mae using my boobs as a bed.

Here's one of them. Her name is Blossom. The other one, Boo, is hiding. Maybe later.

Ida wants to snuggle always (which I love). Tonight I put her in a sling to snuggle while I did some housework. :)

I'm SO excited about it! My oldest cat, Pippi, used to be snuggly. But she likes her space more and more as she gets older (she's 16 now). My youngest cat can't ever sit still for more than 8 seconds. So this is a real treat.

So I'm pretty sure Miss Ida Mae needs to become a permanent part of the takecare family...

She really is! In real life, she looks a bit rough right now. She wasn't eating properly for whoknowshowlong because of mouth pain. So she's real skinny and her coat is kind of a mess (I'm guessing from some malnutrition). In a week or so when her mouth is more healed from her surgeries I'm gonna start feeding her some more calorie-dense wet food in gravy (right now she can only eat pate) to try to fatten her up a bit. And possibly start her on some sort of supplement or oil for her coat.

I'm definitely going to adopt her. I love her so much. The shelter has offered to let me foster her long-term before officially adopting her though, which means they will cover her medical expenses til I officially adopt her. That's huge and really generous of them, because she may need more work done before her mouth issues are over.

So, the short version is that miss Ida Mae has found her forever home! And I am super excited about it! But its kind of in an under-the-radar kind of way right now.
