Everyone! There was a big tractor-trailer accident yesterday (7/15/13) on I-5 that affected 50,000 "spent" battery hens. They cannot be reintroduced into the "food system" and will all be killed and composted unless new homes can be found. Lighthouse Sanctuary in Oregon is working to find homes for them, and the more people who contact them, the more hens they can save. I plan on taking at least two for my new backyard! Chickens are the absolute coolest, and I was planning on getting some anyway. I'm happy that I can help rescue some from this horrible accident.

Obviously, this goes without saying on the PPK, but these are beautiful creatures who have likely never felt the grass beneath their feet or the sun in their faces, and are not suitable for eating. Although they are considered "spent" they may still lay, and often, so be prepared for that.

I believe the chickens are in California at the moment but there are sanctuaries in Oregon and Washington working to find them homes, so if you live anywhere on the West Coast, see if you can help! Here's the Lighthouse Sanctuary post on the subject:

Quote:
Homes needed for large rescue of 50,000 battery caged hens. White Leghorn Hens, 2 y/o
We will be taking in 20-30 hens which will be available for adoption through us...we will take in more if we find MORE committed homes. Please contact us soon...503-394-4486. If the hens cannot be rescued and new homes found, the remaining hens will be killed and composted. The rescue is scheduled for the end of the month

I saw this on your facebook and forwarded to a friend in portland who I know is interested in chickens. He already got some unfortunately, but said he'd forward it around.

OKay, updates and details- The rescue effort is being coordinated through Animal Place in Vacaville (about halfway between SF and Sacramento, for those of you unfamiliar with NorCal). They will be sending hens up to Lighthouse Sanctuary for those in Oregon interested in adopting, so I guess if you live in Oregon contact them.

If you are in California and want to adopt a hen or two or three, fill out their online application, and just mention in there somewhere that you are interested in rescuing one of the hens from the 7/15 accident on I-5: http://animalplace.org/adoptable_birds.html

Thanks everyone! I can't wait to get my little gals and give them a wonderful new start.

It's hard to imagine the magnitude of 50,000 hens. And that's probably just a drop in the agricultural bucket.

That's what really got me too. ONE truck, one accident, fifty thousand animals.

I wish I could help out; thanks to everyone who is!

ABSOLUTELY to pics when I get my gals. I am gonna need some kickass names. I always think chickens should have old-fashioned school marm names, like Gertrude or Enid.

And yeah, I've had the same thought where I just stopped suddenly and realized... one vehicle, one accident... 50,000 creatures. It really is a drop in the bucket. It's so overwhelming to think about. But as corny as it is, it's like the story of the boy throwing starfish back in the ocean- it will make a difference to the two I save, and that's good enough for me.
