My sweet puppy girl (okay shes not a puppy, shes 7.5 years old) normally weighs about 65 lbs- she can healthfully stay between 60-67, Id say, but any more than that and her lil ribs get covered in fat deposits and the vet says to put her on a "diet." So, the past couple of weeks she got on the fat side again so we have gone back to being very strict with the food- they dont normally get a lot of table scraps but they do get them from time to time, so we cut that down. She was sneaking her brothers food from his bowl so we are now supervising meals.

She gains too much weight frequently and we just have to watch things for a few weeks till she gets back into a normal range and she usually does just fine with stuff. This time though, she CONSTANTLY acting hungry. She pounces on her food the second she has a chance, scarfs it all up and then tries to eat her brother's food (he is VERY much the dominant dog but I know she is not challenging that with the food, hes just a slower eater and doesnt seem to mind her having some.) Oh, we feed twice a day- once in the morning, once in the evening.

I feel like what I'm describing will sound like "normal dog behavior," But I've been this girls mommy for 7 years and I'm saying its not normal for her at all. Shes acting starved. :( Her bowel movements are normal...She's spayed so she is not pregnant, although I do wonder if it could be hormonal somehow--do doggy girls go through menopause???

She was on an antibiotic for a month which ended about two months ago. Ive often wondered if she was having tummy issues cus of that. Im wondering if a probiotic would help? (If you know of a cheap but effective one, let me know!)

Im also trying to think if there is anything I can be giving her to help her feel full and satisfied in addition to her food that wont add to many calories. Wondering specifically about a baked sweet potato a day or some plain rice. And cut back her food just a bit? She's on a great, high-protein, soy/wheat/corn free vegetarian dog food. We switched over to it a few months back when we discovered she her old dog food changed the ingredients in their formula to include soy, which she is apparently allergic to. This new food (v-dog) has less fillers than her old food so portions are not as large as they used to be but shes been used to v-dog for a couple months and never seemed this hungry before...

Oh I just though....I wonder if she could have worms??? Would that make her hungrier? How can I give Diatamacious Earth?

Sorry it so long, I didn't want to miss any important info...

I assume if she's been going to the vet frequently that they're doing other tests for things like diabetes and thyroid issues or whatever else?

Maybe this is too obvious, but has she become more active? More frequent walks or daycare or dog park visits?

Not really going to be a popular statement on a forum like this one, but it's really funny to me that you mention a fairly recent transition to v-dog. I went through a couple months of hell when my dog started acting crazy forking hungry all the time, enough that I went to the vet for it, and apparently her glucose levels were all forked up but they couldn't figure out why. Many expensive tests later with no answers I realized that it started a couple months after switching her to a vegetarian diet. I then started feeding her Acana Pacifica and she's totally been normal ever since and her glucose is back to normal.

Was she ever placed on a steroid to help with the reaction to the soy? Steroids definitely have an effect on weight gain and appetite increases.

She has been to the vet, I dont think they checked for diabetes. Hummm, thats worth thinking about... No extra activity here.

The dogs have been vegetarian for about 5 years. They were previously on...I think it was called Natures Recipe veg formula and did fine on it all the way up until the changed the recipe to include soy. My male dog (her litter mate) has zillions of allergies to meat foods which is what prompted the switch to veg food to start with.

She got a steroid shot when we were first trying to figure out what was up with the hives. She was an the antibiotic for a month due to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and had a steroid for the first week of that...so the steroids were all given nearly three months ago. I don't feel like I could suddenly be seeing ill effects from that...

My mom feeds her dogs canned green beans with their food to act as a filler. She felt bad giving them less food when they both needed to lose weight so this made her feel not guilty (the vet recommended it). She buys the cheapest ones the store has and I think gives each dog 1/2 a can a day (her dogs are ~30-40 lbs). Maybe she gives them 1/4 of a can each per day... I don't remember for sure.

If there are medical issues, green beans won't help. But if she just needs more food in her tummy without the calories it could help.

It sounds like talking to your vet would be a good idea, but, on the low-cal dog snack front, my dog (who's on a lifelong quest to get as fat as he can) likes:

carrot slices
kale or collard green stems (he won't touch them if there are any leafy bits left, but loves crunching up the stems)
defrosted frozen peas
chickpeas

We also mix defrosted frozen greens (usually kale, collards or mixed greens) or peas and canned pumpkin in with his kibble to bulk it up.

I would absolutely have a fecal test done, if for no other reason than to rule out parasites as a problem.

My boyfriend's 21 year old dog (and that is no exaggeration as I originally thought) just recently died, she had a vegan diet for a good portion of her life, we fed her Natural Balance's formula. She began acting like she was starving all the time a few months before her death. She would even guard the dog food to make sure that our other dog would not get any. One day she started vomiting and would not stop even after there was no foods left. We took her to the emergency vet and she was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease. We took her to a new vet that was recommended by my boyfriend's mother and they informed us that it was most likely caused by the steroids she had been given for allergies. You might see if they think it might be that.

You should just go and ask your vet about this problem.
