So our cat had a bladder stone last year and the dry food they gave us for stones causes constipation. We had one incident where she went to the vet to manually remove her poop because she was so constipated.

What we do is the following:
1) Semi-regularly give the cats wet food
2) Semi-regularly use laxatone (it helps coat things, mostly used for fur balls)

So I noticed my cat was having some difficulty pooping today so I looked at her butt and it looked like her anus may have been slightly swollen? I looked up a rectal prolapse ant id definitely doesn't look like that (no redness). I also plan to try again when my husband gets home as she was done with me.

She then had this huge poop. So I think the swollen rectum may be from her straining? I am going to up my efforts to give her wet food and laxatone.

Are there any tips or things to look for? A vet visit will be coming but I may move it up depending on what I see once my husband and I wrangle her later today. Any other recommendations?

i'll preface this by saying i have no idea or experience with this issue... but could it be related to not drinking enough water too? if you don't already do this, we have little bowls all over the place to encourage our cats to drink more, and it seems to work. their favorite are the trays we put under the rads for humidity in the winter, because they think they are being sneaky and stealing something they shouldn't have access to.

Yeah she tends to drink water out of strange places but she likes her water fountain.

My husband came home and we checked. I'm happy to report that her anus looks normal. I will be monitoring her though.

I haven't dealt with the same issue, but Jeremy was having problems with his anal glands and he wouldn't poop because it hurt. He ended up getting colitis, so I hope your kitty keeps pooping.
