I don't think I've ever posted pictures of recently adopted Sable... she looked quite different! When she was rescued, she was really gross. Try to picture what a collie who had lived for over a year in a tiny, shit-filled pen would look like. That was her. She was matted and filthy, but the worst part was the smell. You could smell her from 20 feet off. My parents' one requirement before she came home was that she had to be groomed. So we dropped Sable off at the groomer, who told us it would take a while. I did some errands and came home to find a message on the machine. It was the groomer. She sounded upset and said, "I need to talk to you about your dog. Please call me asap." Of course, I immediately panicked and thought Sable had escaped the grooming shop and run into traffic, or something equally as horrible. Luckily, the bad news was just that the groomer could not get the stench out of Sable. She had been through several different shampoos, including a special deodorizing one, and (as the groomer became more desperate) Dawn dish soap. The groomer said, "I'm sorry. I think the only way to get rid of the smell is to take the hair off." A week or so later. You can see that her paws were still stained brown from having to stand in urine and feces. Two months later: Her hair looked so funny as it was growing in, and the texture was odd. One year later (I think it's the only photo I have with all 3 of the dogs we had at the time). It took about 2 years for her coat to fully grow back. She is so fluffy now that sometimes I forget what she looked like back then!

Yay, Sable pictures! She was still adorable even without her fluffy coat.

How awful for Sable's original situation. It must have been really bad for her paws to stay stained for so long. Shaved collies look so goofy, though. Orion had a funky shave when we adopted him too. They had shaved his sides and belly, giving him a strange full-body mohawk. He had a square of fur shaved off his chest, maybe because of damage done by his collar, and they had cut off his whiskers (??!!)

Yeah, it was pretty bad. Her owner was a drug dealer, and for years I lived in fear that he would get out of jail, track her down, and try to get her back. aelle wrote: Shaved collies look so goofy, though. I wonder why they had to cut off his whiskers! I was originally worried that Sable's hind end would have to be shaved, because it was so matted. I was picturing her with some sort of weird lion cut, so I guess the all over shave wasn't so bad. At least it was even.

Thanks! It still baffles me that these lovely guys were abandoned (got Gato from the local pound and Beepo from a cat rescue). They are such wonderful cats! Albeit a little on the crazy side. They're part siamese and boy is that scene from Lady and the Tramp accurate in regards to siamese personalities and energy levels. At least life is never dull. ;)

So if I were to rub Marla's belly, would she purr with happiness or shred my hand to pieces? Or is it both?

Agnes loves hanging out on top of the microwave, and now she shares her spot with Effie, sometimes.

After losing Riley almost 2 months ago, I was a complete mess.. He was a feisty kitty, and I had no idea how much I was attached to him until I lost him. Fiona is his complete opposite. Again, I don't think they come any sweeter than this one.

This is Reuben. Got him cheap because he's a bit of a wonky example of the breed - saggy belly, missing some front teeth. Love him to bits. :)

fatcat, your cats all look, dare I say, fat. I battle the bulge with my 10 month old calico. I'm not going to go crazy worrying about it though I've decided. Plus my last girls who were hefty and pudgy lived to an old age.
hannahkate, Reuben is gorgeous. Love those ears.

My boys (the two in front) are fatties. I blame it on the fact that they were feral and always think the food will disappear. I'm working on getting Fry to lose weight because extra weight is harder on him with only three legs. Jeremy, well, he's actually big-boned as you can see by his giant cat head.

I understand and that could be the case. I'm not sure what to blame regarding my girls. The tabby has a different body build and is naturally sleeker. But they both food seek. They are also improving a bit as they get older. Well, I guess there are plenty of pudgy pets in the world.
