Karma turned 11 today! I bought her a new bed.

NOM NOM NOM

She had a big birthday salad.

I can't believe she is 11! She went blind a couple of years ago, but doesn't seem to have aged beyond that.

Our foster dog Thea left for New England on Friday. They picked her up from my work, and I cried in front of all my coworkers like a big baby. She's going to be reunited with her brother though! I was told he was very sad without her, so I'm happy for them, even though I miss her.

Soooo, on Saturday, we adopted this girl. Her name is Sissy. She was scheduled to be euthanized very soon because she'd been there a month without being adopted. She's pretty awesome though, so I can't understand why she hadn't been picked up yet. She's a little chubby and has mommy boobs, so maybe jerks were being superficial.

I don't have many photos of her yet, but here's one from this morning.

and her photo from the shelter.

Also, our other dog, Toby, and Thea the foster, just for good measure.

Oh my, I'm smiling like mad over Sissy's rescue, and at the reunion of Thea and her brother. I can appreciate the big sad too.

Just a wonderful post and snapshot.

Sissy's eyes are so pretty! (And I have seen people pass over dogs for having saggy boobies, because people are stupid!)

So the shelter had Sissy listed as a 45 lb dog. I took her over to my work to bathe her immediately after we adopted her, and as soon as I lifted her into the tub, I was like "This dog does not weigh 45 lb." I guess they lied about the weight to get her adopted, which is fine, but I'm curious if maybe she was carrying puppies or if she was just overweight from overfeeding. She had been there for a month, and they said the day we adopted her that she'd had a two-mile walk that morning. I assume that's for her weight and energy level, because I can't imagine they have time to walk every dog in the shelter for that length. It's obvious that she's used to getting people food, the way she sits and looks at us when we're eating. She's still a little overweight, but mostly just really muscular. We noticed on her paperwork that it said she was 75 lb when she was admitted and 69 when we adopted her, but she's not much bigger (volume-wise) than the average 50 lb dog. A little rambley, mostly just curious about the possible pregnancy though. How much weight do dogs gain when they're expecting?

Also meant to add that the way she licks on our other dog and the one cat who will let her is very motherly. So weird!

Well, dog gestation period is 63 days, so if the shelter had her a month, she would be at least halfway into a pregnancy. When a pregnant dog starts to gain weight, you'll notice her tummy getting bigger, not just all around fatness. You can google image "pregnant dog" to see what that looks like. They can also start lactating and having vaginal discharge when close to whelping. Has she been to the vet recently? They would be able to tell. If she's not spayed, she could also go through a false pregnancy.

I'm always surprised when shelter adopt out animals without doing spay/neuter first. I know it's usually a budget thing, but you're basically guaranteeing that the level of dogs in need is not going to go down, which costs the shelter money to house and care for...

Oh, sorry I didn't clarify! That post was all over the place. She's spayed now. The mommy boobies, the licking on our other animals, and the fact that she'd lost 6 pounds in a month on her paperwork (75 lb when she was admitted and 69 lb when we adopted her) made me think that maybe she'd been pregnant when she was brought in.

Oh, that's good! I thought you were concerned about her being pregnant now, and was thinking jeez, adopting a pregnant dog, what a surprise that would be! Did they give you any paperwork? It might say. Our vet always jots down notes about the exam and spay, usually saying everything was normal. If the dog was found pregnant on exam or during spay, it would be noted on the form. I'm not sure if it's standard practice for shelters to give all those medical records to adopters, though. She could have just lost weight through diet and exercise if the shelter was working on that. Especially if she was getting a ton of fatty people food and treats in her former home, and then going to a shelter and getting just dog food and being walked every day.

I don't think I've posted this picture yet of Ida. She's the absolute sweetest cat I've ever met in my life. <3

Also, I must have posted this last summer, but I just rediscovered this and wanted to post it again because it's so funny. This is one of my foster kittens, Violet, from last summer. She has long gone to her forever home.
