I'm probably freaking out a bit more than I need to be, I'm not sure.
The kitten Dakini and I have somehow found herself outside for a few hours today. I'm not exactly sure how it happened.. My mom felt bad that she was in my room all day and decided to let her wander around the house. Which is nice of her and I've asked her to do before. But she decided to lock herself in her bedroom while she was out. My step dad was downstairs watching TV and decided to leave for the casino at some point and that's when we think she slipped out. He knew she was down there and the way my front door is, it'd be really hard not to notice the cat slipping out.
Fast forward to me driving home from work, my mom crying hysterically because she can't find Luna anywhere and was using the crinkle balls she loves so much to try and get her attention. I tried thinking of anywhere she could be and told her of all the places to look. Randomly my mom decided to turn on the front porch light and there was Luna staring in the front glass door. She's 'sort of' been outside before with mine and dakini's direct supervision but we were either holding her or just let her out a few feet before scooping her up. We want her to strictly be an indoor cat.
I'm just freaking out because she was out for at LEAST an hour and a half and has no experience in our neighborhood. Also, I have a canal behind my house that leads right to Lake St. Clair, which is huge. She seems alright.. No visible things to be concerned about and I've seen her drink and eat. She's also been SOOOOOO cuddly since I've been home and has been napping on my chest while I write this in a really awkward pose.
Hasn't really had the energy or interest to play at all... Maybe she just needs the rest.

My two adult indoor only cats recently got out and took themselves on an 8 hour adventure around town. My partner forgot to close the door when he went to work that morning. They got out, and I didn't even notice until the first cat came back 8 hours later, and was screaming to be let inside. I then searched the house and realized that the other kitty was gone. Panicked, I went outside and started tapping on a can of cat food, which got the attention of the other kitty, who I had to scruff to get in the door. They got so many kitty treats. Since then I have been really careful about leaving doors or windows open.
Glad to hear your furbaby is okay! <3

glad luna is ok!
since you live somewhere where people are all kind of doing their own thing and not really on the same page about kitty safety, it's probably a really good idea to make sure your kitty has a microchip and a tag on at all times, or at least when you're not home! on the plus side, you have a kitty who is smart/cautious enough to stay near home and want to come back inside. that's definitely a positive if something like this happens again.

Glad that Luna is safe and sound.
I also second the microchip and or collar w/ID tag advice.
Give her lots of snuggies from me and the cats.

I have a collar and tag for her.. I got it when she was too small and couldn't make it tight enough for her then.. I tried putting it on her a few weeks ago and she absolutely flipped out so I took it off.
I think I will get the microchip as soon as I can afford to. I'll speak with my Vet about the pricing and all that jazz.
She's been SUPER snuggly since last night. It's adorable!!

I'm glad Luna is fine! Cats.
Lady Marmalade sneaked out past me this evening. It's about 34 degrees and raining and pitch black, and projected to snow. So I had to drop everything and go hunting for her with my lantern that sheds no light for half an hour until she decided she was ready to come in. Then she had the nerve to beg for treats. She is extremely proud of herself.

So glad Luna was home and waiting to be let back in!
My cats flipped out when I first put their collars on them... they quieted down after an hour or so and now are fine with the collar and tag. I did get the ones that have the safety latch bit. And I made sure to put it on them initially when I was home all day, just in case they figured out someway to get their foot stuck in it or something.

I know I mentioned these on the old boards but the absolute best collars that I have found for cats are Beastie Bands http://www.beastiebands.com/Designs.htmlThey are the only ones that I know of that are specifically designed for cats and I have yet to hear of a cat ever escaping one from one of them- or for that matter injuring them selves. (They also look really cool). It might not be love at first sight but the cat will get used to it and the reason why you should have a collar and a tag as well as a micro chip is that if anyone were to find her they could get in touch with you immediately as opposed to taking her to a shelter.

She's been SUPER snuggly since last night. It's adorable!! Put the collar on her with a leash and pop her straight out the door for a little paddle about. She'll learn to associate it with something good and will soon be happy to leave it on. Angus never wore a collar and I taught him to wear a harness at 15 by this method. Now he'll happily sit in the window in his Santa suit.

My kitty first flipped out when she had a collar on but she is used to it now.
I had a similar story where we had a dog walker that let the cat slip out. She was out for at least 4 hours. I came home, called for her but no sign. I flipped out. It was getting dark. So we started walking around the block calling her name. She came out from under a bush and meowed at us.
