for serious, grazing and everything.
ok so not really, but I have been wondering if anyone knows the real reason why dogs eat grass, or if its just because they are omnivores. I remember hearing as a kid that some animals ate grass so they could vomit, but that obviously isn't true since my dog has a heyday munching her heart out on lush tall grass without expelling the contents of her stomach. (it's so cute watching her rip up huge bits of grass like a cow though). So anyways, anyone knowO

My neighbor's dog does this all the time as well. Not mine though. Weird. But I have heard it's a digestive thing. It does make cats throw up though, maybe that's where you heard that?

Chester does ALL the time! Like right after he gets fed, he'll finish breakfast and move on to the weeds. I read a bunch of stuff on the internet that basically said, either they're sick, in need of leafy greens, or just weird. Well I ruled out sick, because he's not and doesn't always puke it up and has done it forever, tried to give him some spinach and lettuce with his food - he ate the food, left the greens, so.....

well deductive reasoning clearly leads to the conclusion that our dogs are just weird. a clearly logical and scientific answer i'd say. (and definitely true for my dog at least).

I've noticed that when they want to throw up, they eat bigger rougher blades of grass, and when they want to graze they eat the more tender grass. I think they just like it. Every spring at the shelter, there's this certain grass that the dogs go nuts for when it sprouts. For some dogs it gets to the point where we have to keep them off the grass because they will eat so much of it that they will be pooping out just giant wads of grass. It's really weird!

My dog will throw up if she eats a lot of grass (so we have to monitor her when she's outside) but I always assumed she just eats it because she likes it.

My lab growing up was a very very selective weed eater. It never seemed to make her vomit.

Hank eats grass but I never thought anything of it because Hank eats everything. Even things that aren't food. Pants are his favourite.

My dog Ginger grazes too, I adopted her about 6 mos after my first dog. Before Ginger, I never saw Murphy eat grass, after he saw Ginger eating it he started in too. Now they both graze out there for about 20 min just about every morning. I asked my vet about it since I'd never seen a dog eat so much grass before, he said as long as they weren't getting sick it was fine. They do seem to prefer the tender young grass and Ginger will dig up new shoots to eat.
