Have you guys heard of this? Reverse Sneezing? My poor dog Jorda had an episode yesterday and I thought she would die right in front of me. Totally scary, but according to the vet, not really dangerous. She checked out OK
This isn't my dog, but she did this only more violent and she was shaking and drooling..

and then on the way back from the vets, I slammed her tail in my car door on accident. I don't know how she's OK after that but fortunately she is. uugghh.. bad day for my sweet Jorda.

My shih-tzu has made sounds like that before. His vet just says they tend to snort like that. It's interesting that my Tucker, your Jorda, and the dog on in the video all seem to have similar nose and mouth areas. What kind of dog is Jorda? Or what kind mostly? Tucker's not 100% shih-tzu I don't think.

She's a Pit Bull.. we rescued her so we don't know if she's purebred, but the shelter seemed to think. The vet said it was much more common in smaller dogs.

Miss Willow does this when she gets too excited. What we do is stop her in her tracks and then cover up her nose so that she can't breathe through it, that is what a vet told me to do and it works most of the time.

Both my pit bull and my pit bull mix do this so often that I actually googled it a long time ago. I came across some advice that said to rub the dog's throat while it happens and it will shorten the duration of the sneezing fit. It actually does seem to help.

I have a Boston Terrier (like the dog in the video), and he reverse sneezes pretty frequently. It scared the everloving hell out of me the first time I saw it, but now I just hold him close to make him feel safe and reassured, then gently rub his throat in a downward motion, like swallowing. It seems to help him.

It's especially common in brachycephalic/short-faced dogs.

Chester's done this once or twice, but I never knew that's what it was. Just thought he was trying to get attention. Still do.

I've known a bunch of dogs that do this! Especially when they get over excited. It's also a symptom of kennel cough, so if your dog has been in contact with other dogs (especially at a kennel or daycare) and starts doing this suddenly, that is a possibility.

One of my dogs does this all the time. She gets really scared too when she does it and tries to hide under a couch or something. Also she'll shake her head. I've tried throat rubbing, haven't notice it make a difference at all.

I've never had a dog that didn't do this once in awhile (like the video, not with shaking and/or drooling.) And all my dogs have been doxies or doxie mixes, so decidedly not brachycephalic. Amos likes to scare the crepe out of me by doing it in the middle of the night so I wake up thinking he's dying.

Edit: I did not know what it was called. I just figured it was a dog thing since they all seem to have done it on occasion.

Wow. I'm glad I finally know what sound my dog is making. I was freaking out over this.

My dog did that once after one of her first times at the groomer. I was sure she had kennel cough, because she did it several times the next day. Turned out to be nothing, and it hasn't happened again.
I remember seeing that same video though when I was trying to diagnose her!!

also if you hold your finger over their nose for a few seconds and force them to breath out of their mouth it helps them stop.

My dog does that when she gets too excited! It stops when she calms down, so we never thought about it much. It's usually just accompanied by a bunch of tail wagging, squealing, and jumping up and down.

If it happened like you described I'd be concerned too, though! I never knew what it was called. I'm glad her tail is okay. I'm sure she knows you love her. :)

This works! My mom has a dauchsund (however that is spelled) that does this everytime she gets over excited, which is several times a day. She's a very anxious dog.

Yes, my beagle does this once in a while and it can be really scary! It sometimes lasts a while and gets more and more intense, then she coughs but nothing comes out. I usually rub her throat, as Lacy said, and just try to calm her down; it seems to help.

I never knew what it was! My chihuahua did this all the time, when she got excited.

I was walking with my chihuahua/terrier/pug mix a few weeks ago and she began doing this. She had been a little sick and I seriously thought she couldn't breath. I picked her up and RAN to the car and drove to the emergency vet, all the time crying like I was in an old movie: "Don't worry baby, Momma's not gonna let you die, don't die!"

Of course, by the time we got to the vet, she was fine. Based on my description, she knew right away it was a reverse sneeze and she showed me that YouTube video to confirm it.

And then charged me $90 for the visit. Most expensive sneeze ever.
