Thanks guys. Raspberrycomplaint- they didn't really. The ultrasound tech posited the idea that it was a rare congenital kidney condition that shih tzu's sometimes get that's not visible on ultrasounds and the ER and vet doctors seemed to think that was the most likely candidate too. Everyone at my vet office was so nice. The doctor called and left me a long voicemail while I was at work and the vet office sent me a card that brought me to tears (though I guess that's easy to do at the moment).

Vegimator, I never met Percy but I fell in love with him the first time I ever saw a picture. I immediately felt like there was something special about him. Kidney failure is terrible because there's usually nothing you can do about it except make the little one comfortable. I'm surprised at myself for sobbing, but my puppy died of renal failure about five years ago, so I guess that's why the news of dear Percy's passing hit me so hard. You have my sincerest sympathies.

I'm SO sorry, Percy was a beautiful dog; I'm so glad you were able to comfort him during his last days. Be well.
