Some lil birds built a nest on top of our metal housed porch light - next to the front door. I do not want to disturb the birds and make them as happy as can be. I took down a noisy door jam today since it rattled every time the door opened. What about turning on the light? I do not want scrambled baby birds! It is a low impact 'green' light if that helps. Please help! :)

I'm 100% guessing right here, but maybe they chose it because it's warm? I've really only had freaky old 90's lamps/bulbs get so hot that they're uncomfortable to touch, but those are all indoors so I'm not sure.

I wouldn't recommend touching the nest or the eggs, but I think everybody knows that. Just in case though!

I am trying not to even look at the nest!

If it's a compact florescent bulb, it should be fine - providing just enough warmth to keep the eggs toasty.

Unless you normally leave it on all night and they knew that when they were building the nest, I'd probably leave it off. I think even minimum heat could build up enough to cause problems.

I also think the light might be disturbing?

It is on all night - we have a dark block. I turn it off on the AM and see them in the morning in the nest.

I would continue to use the light; the bird parents may have factored the warmth in when they built the nest. As long as it isn't a very powerful or super-bright light with lots of heat.

Good luck with the birdies! Why do they have to build their nests in such funny (to us) spots?

The light is housed in a metal box, with a lid and the light is a low light. I always see the bird's lil tail over the nest - so cute!

A few years back we had a baby blue bird fledgling in our backyard. Mama bird hated us! We could not go out back, Mar got grumpy he could not roam in his sun patch in the yard...Hectic!

that's totally different than what I imagined. I think they're happy where they are!

We've got something similar going on. There's a nest under the overhang outside our front door. It's been there for three years, and I don't know if the same mama bird comes back each spring or if it's kind of like a crash pad for whoever lays her eggs there first, but I've been careful to open the front door slowly so she doesn't get spooked. I kind of want to get a ladder and take a peek at the babies when they're hatched, but I don't want to disturb anyone. Anyway, good job on caring for your bird squatters!

Looks like they found a good spot. I'd just keep an eye on the nest to see if anything looks awry, but otherwise, they look just fine.

I have been looking out the front door glass and peep hole! I have become some sort of bird stalker!

I could not get to close or film to long - I did not want to disturb the nest!

Wow! What a beautiful story. How lucky you are to have been able to follow their journey.

I once lived in a house on a hill with a big verandah overlooking bushland and was able to watch two magpies build their nest in the top of a very tall gum tree. I was nowhere near as close to them as you are to your birdies, but it was wonderful when i saw them take their first flight. They were on the edge of the nest, practically screaming their little heads off and the parents pushed them out and then they flew! So exciting!

Thanks for sharing yours.
