Hey all! I'm living in Kanagawa Prefecture Japan, specifically Yokosuka. I am near Yokohama, and about 1.5 hours train ride from Tokyo city.
I just wanted to share a couple of locations I was lucky enough to find, and how I feel about the food/service.
J's Kitchen, Tokyo
http://www.js-kitchen.com/eng_index.htmlGreat website, English menu available, great ambiance. Wonderful for lunch to get the menu-set. Very close to the train station. Healthy. Bonus + bakery downstairs with doughnuts.
Brown Rice Cafe, Tokyo
http://www.brown.co.jp/english/index.htmlThis cafe has a good website, a translated menu, a deli where you can buy vegan items and baked goods. And they are located near a nice grocery store with organic produce. The food was a little expensive, and the cafe smelled strongly of incense.
Maharaja Makuhari, Chiba Japan
This Indian resteraunt was easy to find, and had vegan options available such as flatbreads, samosa, daal, the regualar stuff you'd expect. I thought the service was confusing at best and the cooks were staring at us from the kitchen because we were taking a while looking at the menu.
If you really want good Indian food, Mohan in Yokohama, and Nirvana in Yokosuka take the cake.
Many sushi places I've been to don't have avocado on their menu and I think it sucks. BUT, the same building where Maharaja Makuhari is in Chiba, has a great sushi place with an all veggie plate. The avocado roll was the best I've ever had but you have to request without mayo to make it vegan.
The best Japanese food was the traditional Japanese resteraunt at the More's City Mall in Yokosuka. We told them we don't eat meat, fish, cheese, or egg. They then proceeded to whip us up a menu set for lunch which only cost 1,200 yen. It had mushrooms tempura (without egg!), miso soup, white rice, a tofu dish, japanese pickle, and a yummy salad with tofu.
There are a lot of flavored soymilks you can buy at any 7-11 store or Lawson, they are easy to find.
When in doubt, inari-zushi it up.
