I'm going to Reykjavik for about 4 days in March for a pre-birthday trip. I've already printed a couple pages off Happy Cow but does anyone know of any places I should check out?

Pannkakan provided some useful information in this thread: http://forum.theppk.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2612&hilit=iceland.

It totally IS the NZ of Europe. When I was there it was windy and wet and cold, and I drank (amazing) soy lattes in cafes on the main street. It was like being back on Cuba St in Wellington!

Let us know how your trip goes! My friends went to Iceland for their honeymoon this past summer and they loved it and made me want to go so much. But they repeatedly said, "Vegans would have a really hard time there." Just not a lot of produce from what I understand. If you manage to fare okay, I might check in to heading there myself... good luck!

I've been twice and really enjoyed it. There are a couple veggie restaurants that serve plenty of vegan food. Everything is more expensive though.

I'm going on a Northern Lights tour! Excite! Hope I effing see them cos paying for the trip nearly wiped me out (No thanks to Expedia for charging me twice for my fare)! And if I don't, I'll troll the innerwebs for a picture and photoshop my face into it looking pleased with myself.

Just bumping this as I'm in the middle of planning a trip to Reykjavik in October. Has anyone been fairly recently? I think a few veg restaurants have closed over the last few years and a lot of the info I've found is a bit out of date. Definitely going to book a place with a kitchen, partly to save money and partly due to a lack of vegan options. Usually I factor food choices into my hols, but there are so many (literally) awesome places in Iceland that I'd like to see.

It looks ace, I hope you can make a trip soon, lutin! I just booked accommodation.... I was definitely swayed by the fact that this place seems to be located directly next door to the one and only fully vegan eatery in all of Reykjavik!

I was there in September. I'm not on my laptop, so I can't look up names of places. plenty of places were open and accommodating, but having a kitchen was AAA+++ awesome because places shut SO EARLY and if you're out on adventures all day, you'll miss your meals. hell, even just my normal eating habits were too late for most places :)

Thanks for the reply, joshua. The place I booked has a kitchen, which I think is going to be super useful. Am I right in thinking that vegan staples (soy milk, tofu, etc...) are pretty easy to pick up in most grocery places? Did you have a good time?!

I don't really remember tofu, but I wasn't looking for it. soy milk was easy enough though (Alpro was in most of the shops). there's a couple of health food stores - one was kinda downtown and smallish, the other was a little east (10/15min walk) on Borgartún..can't remember the name but I think this might have been it? https://goo.gl/maps/ib7kR if not..it's nearby. it *should* have all the tofu and other staples you need!

Thanks! I'm sure I'll survive if I can't find tofu, anyway! But, y'know.... these soy boobs aren't going to maintain themselves. I'm super looking forward to it, despite being many moons until October. I'll probably chill out about it soon and then get re-excited in September or so.

No worries about the soy breasts, there's plenty of soy milk to be found.

oh October? just beware you'll be outside of the tourist season, so your sightseeing options are limited. half the country seems to shut down late in September (I literally arrived the week after the season ended. whooooops)

it's still a-okay, don't worry

I have nothing helpful to add but I really want to go to Iceland! I doubt I can go this year unless getting there by ferry is magically cheap but maybe next year.

I think you should drive up through Scandinavia and get the ferry over from Norway in the first week of July when Bry and I will next be there...

What were your itineraries / recommended sight? Or for those who are planning their trip, what are you thinking of doing? We're considering a week in Iceland later this year.

Depends what time of year you are going, to some extent, aelle. The "Golden Circle" of Gulfoss waterfall, lava fields, geysers, hot springs and extinct volcanos is an absolute must. Ditto the Blue Lagoon, for all its tourist trappery. Thingvellir national park is beautiful. Puffin watching in the summer. Whale watching and northern lights in the winter. I also went to the hydroelectric power station for a tour, and found it really interesting. Reykjavik life is pretty laid back, centering on fabulous public swimming pools and people-watching from cafes. Lots of music going on, and lots of apparently heartfelt involvement in traditional community activities - choirs, festivals, dancing. Personally, I absolutely love it there, and would spend a lot more time there if I could.

Sorry, aelle, I just saw your post. I'm not going until October, so I haven't really figured out what we'll be doing yet, but pretty much what Ruby Rose said... although I was lead to believe that winter's not so good for whale watching. I hope I'm wrong and RR is right, because I'd really like to see some forking whales!
