Ok, I need confirmation that I'm reading this right. This is the ingredient list on the volkorenbrood at the Dirk:



(Sorry it's so blurry, but my phone wouldn't focus well on it.) That does mean that all the emulgator they use (the E322, E471 and E482) are plantaardig, doesn't it?

I have some pictures of other accidentally vegan stuff I found at the Dirk, but photobucket is being a jerk, so I'll post that later.

Yes, but because it says "emulgator (plantaardig) (E322)" and "emulgatoren (plantaardig) (E471, E482)", it looks to me like they're specifying that the ones they use are of plant origin.

Or am I interpreting that wrong? Otherwise why would those "plantaardig"s be in there?

I found vegan white chocolate, y'all. Two kinds at the local specialty food shop. One is rice milk based and the other is just advertised as a dairy free white chocolate. Both are labeled as suitable for vegans. And the same brands have vegan milk chocolates as well!

my brother and his wife live in Den Haag and they're coming for a holiday [to New Zealand] at the end of this week. Any suggestions of one or two particularly awesome non-perishable not-too-large vegan products I could recommend they pick up for us before they fly?

Fair Trade pure hagelslag/chocoladevlokken (bitter sweet chocolate sprinkles/curls)
Speculoos pasta and hagel (biscoff spread and sprinkles)
Lu Robuuste Koeken (chocolate chip cookies, the almond and hazelnut varieties are awesome)
Speculaas (spice cookies, not all types are vegan, but some are)
Alpro vla (shelf stable runny pudding, typical Dutch thing. Comes in various flavors including chocolate, vanilla and caramel)

Can you get Tartex in NZ? If not, he could bring a few tins of Tartex spread.

Paloma, I haven't seen the Provamel Hazelnut yet. I have to say that I don't like their almond milk, so I'm curious if I'll like this better. I've been dying to try the Alpro hazelnut milk, though, because their almond milk is amazing!

I bought mine in a non-chain store natuurwinkel in Middelburg of all places, but then Ekoplaza tweeted me on Twitter that they sell it too.

Ha, my home ground! Good to know Broeder Ludovicus is keeping up to date. I will be relying heavily on their stuff when cooking Christmas dinner at at my folks' house in a few weeks. Don't want to schlep to much stuff on the train down from the country of plentiful vegan supplies. (In my parents' village, you can't even get chickpeas or lentils, so forget about nooch or decent soy sauce)

If there's something specific that you would like to have checked whether they actually sell it, let me know. My friend who I was staying with lives just across the road from them, and is there pretty much every day. I bet he'd be willing to check for certain items if I asked. :)

They sent us some hagelslag for our birthdays in June which I haven't used yet, oops!
We don't have biscoff here either, but I always loved speculaas cookies at my Oma's house as a child, so I might ask if they can pick up some speculoos pasta for us to try : )

Tartex has a line of vegan (yeast based) pâtés and spreads. The Mexicana flavor is my favorite!

Are all the Tartex spreads vegan or should I ask for a particular flavour to make sure? [don't think they'll be into label-reading]

I'm pretty sure they're all vegan. I haven't tried them all, but I've never run across any that weren't. You can check out the ingredients on the link in my above post.

Thanks! I had a quick look at a few ingredient lists but wasn't sure if there were any you knew of that we should stay away from. I will ask if they have time/space to try to pick something up for us! Exciting!

They're all vegan! And they're awesome. You can get the tube ones or samplers in small containers. They're pretty light. And delicious.

That's how I'm reading it as well. I'd buy it, and I'm a member of the Vegan Police, so... ;)

Almost all spreads are vegan, except for (copy/paste) POMODORO D´ITALIA

It´s just the Alpro desserts. Not actually called vla on the package, but they resemble Dutch dairy vla so much, we tend to call them that rather than dessert, which is kind of a nondescript name.
