I'm visiting a friend in Berlin next month! I used to live in Hamburg, but don't know Berlin at all. I can speak German (more or less) so they need not be touristy or easy.
Can anyone recommend anywhere (and any beers) I should not miss?
Oh, and wo kann ich gutes Kumpir finden? Als ich in Hamburg war, gab ein fantastisches Kumpir-Imbiss neben der Sternschanze U-Bahnhaltstelle.

This is very much to my interest. My work might take me to Berlin for a couple of days pretty soon.

Boyfriend and I were in Berlin just before Christmas and we ate so well. I highly recommend Kopps, it's a fancy kind of place that makes vegan versions of traditional German food and it's glorious. We thought it was really reasonably priced too, for what it is (but we're from Australia where all food is stupid expensive). And their house beer is decent. It was probably my favourite place we ate over our whole five week Europe trip.
We were also impressed with Lucky Leek, and we really enjoyed Viasko and Vöner. We also ate at Yoyo's, which I didn't love but Boyfriend did. I think I just ordered the wrong thing (don't get the chicken burgers, they're gross).
I miss Berlin!

You HAVE to go to Sfizy Veg, an all vegan italian place - their pizza is incredibly good. Approved by omni italians! The service isn't super friendly, but they are just two people working there (they just opened a few months ago) and they are working their asparagi off everyday. And from Sfizy Veg it's just a five minute walk to Café Vux, they have the best vegan cakes in town. So forking good. Both are in Neukölln, close to the subway station "Karl-Marx-Straße" (Vux) / S-Bahn station "Sonnenallee" (Sfizy Veg). http://www.vux-berlin.com/Sfizy: http://www.happycow.net/reviews.php?id=28222Years ago I was crazy about Yellow Sunhine/Yoyo/Vego, but now I consider them "well I have to eat *some*thing" places.. just a piece of fake meat/fish/.. with some boring lettuce and tomato between boring white bread. edit: I think the best vegan burger I've had was at Pow Wow (Dieffenbachstraße 11, I think that's Kreuzberg).. It's an omni place but they have a vegan burger (tofu based patty, I think) with great peanut sauce. I think it cost 7 Euros (fries included), so it's more expensive than Yoyo etc. but so worth it. Majas Deli is okay.. I sometimes go there during my lunch break. It's one of the oldest vegan places in Berlin but I feel like they haven't really evolved - there are so many better places now.. The lasagna is probably the best thing on the menu - much better than the lasagna at Veganz, which is covered with tons of Daiya, ugh. The tempeh sandwich has really good bread, but otherwise it's a bit bland.. Their cakes/cookies vary. They had great cookies during christmas time, but I've also had the most tasteless vegan cheesecake ever there. Better go for the sweet stuff at Veganz or Café Vux..

Next time I'm in Berlin, I'm going to visit Ohlala tartes shop.
In fact, I'm waiting till the weather is good enough to ride my motorbike to Berlin just for that place. (If you want a vegan brunch in the weekend, you need to make a reservation)

In our group of friends there were two vegans and two people who coudn't eat wheat, so potato extravanza was the solution. I lived in (the boring side of) Altona, miles from anyone else, so we used to meet in Schanzenviertel and go to the pub there before heading over to the Reeperbahn and invariably end up in Wunderbar. Oh, are there any second hand book shops that are worth visiting?

In Altona - or rather, Ottensen - the vegan restaurant Leaf opened last year. Too bad you missed it!

I'll be moving to a town near Berlin this year and I'm all excited ... my hometown is nothing compared to the capital, when it comes to vegan restaurants & good shops - or so it seems. So thanks for all the recommendations, especially yours, left of the dial.
Oh, and I'm also hoping for someone to name one or two second-hand book shops ...!

So... Berlin was pretty cool. Very, very hipster-heavy, but fun.
The most vegany thing we did was go to Veganz, the all-vegan grocery store and café. While it was nice to see such a range of vegan things together, it was all stuff that could be found cheaper elsewhere, really. Lots and lots of the fake meats and fake cheeses a lot of the chocolate were made in Britain and were two and a half times the price in Veganz... but I guess you pay the price of convenience and I think they must get a lot of customers just going OMGITSALLVEGANIHAVETOBUYITALL and spending a fortune.
Me and my friend Nicole (who lives in Berlin) kept reading the ingredients of things to check whether it was vegan, as a kind of reflex action. Silly!
I had a bagel at the café, which was shockingly expensive but nice enough for me not to be complaining!

Update: I've tried the scones at Majas Deli. They have changing add-ins.. If you're there when they have the ones with caramelized banana & chocolate (&marzipan once) - get them, they're awesome (I've never had scones before so I may not know what I'm talking about).
Also, I've been told that Sfizy Veg now has over 100 different pizzas on their menu, including one with pear & blue "cheese". I need to go there again..

I can't believe I didn't rave about Kopps yet. I had a three course lunch there and everything was fantastic. I can't wait till I get back there !

Kopps looks fantastic - I have never heard of that place! I will be going to Berlin in early June. I go there quite frequently because my tattoo artist lives in Berlin, but I usually only stay for the day. I should consider spending the weekend for a change...
