I'm going to be visiting Sydney this week (from the US) and am wondering if there are any must-see, must-eat, must-buy things for a visiting vegan . (Not things like Opera House or Blue Mountains... specifically local vegan things worth pursuing.)

Thanks!

check the Aussie thread - there's tons of vegans from Sydney there. you'll probably want to base yourself in Newtown..there's a fair bit of goodness around that way. check happycow! I think there's vegan croissants in Parramatta somewhere, if you find yourself lost out that way ;)

if you find yourself in Melbourne, I'll be more help :P

Thanks for the info, Joshua. I did start with the Aussie thread, but there are a lot of info for stuff all over Australia & New Zealand, not specifically Sydney. (And a lot of debate about Coles vs. Wollies, stuff like that, etc.)

Yesterday I found "Naked Espresso" in Newtown. They had an AWESOME vegan brunch. I'll be keeping an eye out for vegan croissants.

Yeah, just looking in the thread won't reveal much at the moment; on the old boards, the Aussie Thread had numerous posts where someone had asked precisely your question and we answered with our lists of favourites. I think these are pretty standard:

Basil Pizza (same premises as Naked; not only-vegan, but they offer a variety of vegan pizzas)
any Iku store (Glebe Point Rd, MLC Centre in Martin Place, Bondi or Darlinghurst)
Sabbaba in Bondi or Newtown for falafel pockets
Bodhi in the Park (city) at lunchtime for vegan yum cha (dim sum)... is this weekends-only?
same thing at Green Gourmet in Newtown (or other times without the yum cha)
Peace Harmony in Erskine Street in the city for vegan Thai
people are impressed by the separate vegan menu at Rubyos in Newtown
Yulli's in Surry Hills is a firm favourite

Also:
Mother Chu's in Pitt Street in the city for Buddhist Chinese cooking (super-tasty, but some say a bit oily/gluggy)
NZ chain Burger Fuel have a Newtown store: they offer veggie burgers, and their chips (potato or sweet potato) are vegan

I also like Almustafa in Glebe Point Rd for Lebanese; it's omni, but their vegetarian stuff is all vegan without the yoghurt, and yummy

I'm a weird Canberran in that I hardly ever go to Sydney (I've been once this year!), but last time I was there the boyfriend and I stumbled across Badde Manors on Glebe Point Road and had a pretty decent breakfast. We were just leaving the markets and sat down because it was the only place with a free table, we didn't even realise it was all vegetarian. But yeah, the vegan big breakfast hit the spot.

Thanks for all the info!

I tried "Peace Harmony" on Erskine St. It was decent.... nice to be able to order anything off the whole menu.

I've also been spending a lot of time near Pyrmont area and discovered a little shop called "Pulse" in the Atrium building (60 Union St.). They're not all veg, but have several vegan options on the menu, and were super nice, making us vegan versions of some of their non-veg items.

I like the bohdi in the park place and there's some veg joint on bondi rd between bondi junction and the beach I like to get lunch from when I head out that way.

Hey, how come no one mentioned Sweet William Dairy Free Chocolate ? Just discovered in wolworth that they have vegan white chocolate bars! Amazing! It's been so long since I have had white chocolate!

Any other Australian vegan products I should look out for?

I like the Sweet William rice crackle bars the best, the white chocolate is way too sweet for me.

the soy milk! :) it's what I miss most from Australia, haha. Bonsoy is at the top of that list, but even the Vitasoy flavoured milks are pretty awesome. (Note: it's *very* different than the Vitasoy you'd know in USA)

obligatory: Vegemite

not sure if you can get it in Sydney, but Primasoy tempeh is probably the best Tempeh I've had

Leda products are pretty decent. cookies/biscuits and the like

you can probably get fresher-than-you're-used-to mango and avocado, too. om nom nom

Hi Angie! If I'd known I would have organised a meet up while you were here! When do you leave?

Ajitas vege chips in Coles/Woolworths, Sweet William chocolate spread, Leda Choculence/Mintons, Macro brand Chocolate biscuits, Artisse fruit, nut & seed bars, Eskal lemon wafers... basically head to the health food aisle of either supermarket and you'll find vegan stuff!

If you need more places to eat check out my blog

I'm back home now. Had a great time. Also ended up buying some vegan fish sauce at a store in Newton, Orgran No Egg replacer (Bryanna made meringues out of it!), black tahini, and some other things. (They made me go through the special scanning machines at US Customs.)

One thing to note here for future Sydney travelers... this website:

http://www.131500.com.au/

Put in starting & destination address, and tells you the public transportation you can use to get there. Totally helped me get around Sydney!

I'm glad you had a good time here! You must have gone to Vegan's Choice or Dr Earth, both in Newtown and they sell lots of vegan products. Also, I love black tahini!
